I have yet to see the need for one where I hunt . I have one but it never makes a trip over east with me!

The OP stated that this is a 10 day hunt for sheep in Alaska. Ask the locals, but I am guessing not very many are going on a sheep hunt without a spotter. Just my guess.

I listed the clothes that I would be wearing, I only take the clothes on my back with a spare set of long underwear being the only extra clothes that I would pack with me, plus my rain gear and puffy stuff. I do most times bring a spare set to leave with a few other things at the drop off point, all depends on the hunt at the time.

Most times my pack comes in around 55 lbs, the list above is trimmed for weather, distance etc....

Some very very good ideas here! Thanks for sharing!!

Steve I thing you are one of the first I ever seen list pruning shears.. We used to carry them at times too.
Curious as to why the wiggys waders and glacier socks though. I appreciate your post.

Corbo74. A pillow case? That is something I never thought to take but that sound like a great comfort item! I may have to steal that idea. I e used game bags or dry bags stuffed before but pillow case sounds better.

I don't have the luxury or need to continue to update and try different gear like Aron. Personally, I would look at KUIU, Kryptek, First Lite for clothing and rain gear. I like Zamberlan boots (based on fit), I would look at a different pack (mind is not made up), update a shelter and use the Slick bag and pad I have. The hard part is dealing with the water crossings. I still haven't been particularly excited about anything that I see on the market and/or used. The lightweight stuff is either a PITA or won't hold up to any minor abuse and the rest is either too bulky or heavy. I'm a little hesitant to go the "Moffat route" and have wet feet. As I have paid limited attention to the current gear choices that are available, I am hesitant to say one piece of gear over another. Aron, through trial and error and shear exposure due to his job, has had the opportunity to refine his choices. Also, expensive doesn't always equate to the best.

Great post thanks for your input! For water crossings I use koflach and glacier socks with the option of wearing crampons if it's sketchy. For me it's the best way to cross...

Hilleberg Nallo2GT or Nallo3GT. I haven't used a Sawtooth, but I could see the appeal there too.
Leica Geovid 10X42 HD super ultra (sorry, I don't know what the latest and greatest is)
Leica Televid APO 65
Probably would go with a SG sky 5100 for a 10 day trip.
Boots - too personal to dictate...
OR Crocs
3 pairs of merino socks.
Kuiu Chugach raingear
Whatever 100% merino top and bottom you like best
Kuiu spindrift
Some kind of primaloft vest.
mountain hardwear dome perignon
If they exist, a pair of durable, waterproof, windproof gloves. Breathable would be a plus, but now we're just dreaming.
Lightweight guantlet style shell only gloves, although if the above actually existed, I'd leave the gauntlets at home.
thin fleece gloves
Kimber Montana 280AI (of course) with Leupold 3.5-10/M1
Jetboil Sol TI
Long handled spoon
Mountain house, pepper packets, a little tobasco
Zebralight headlamp
Wiggys waders or Barney's glacier socks. I need to compare those and buy a set this year.
Crocs with a "no float away" strap.

The pruning shears are polycarbonate so they are very light,, nothing beats them for clearing a tent site. So much better than dulling or ruining my knife blade trying to chop brush while it moves and chipping my blade on rocks hidden in the dirt.

The Wiggys Waders were on my list from last fall, my wife was using them. I use them when I don't use plastic boots and glacier socks.

I made a pillow case out of thin fleece, 2 OZs no zipper, just sew it almost shut and I use my puffy stuff to stuff it to make a pillow. I like the feel of fleece better than a dry or game bag.

Remi list looked like a shout out to his sponsors. I possibility did the link wrong but I could add all of his items to my cart

That's what I was thinking. Thats the one thing that would stink sbout being a hunting movie star. You do what your sponsers say and use their gear.

Now Ray I think that might be the best comfort item I ever seen on a gear list ;)

You said ultimate, so a cub has to be on that list. You need to spend time in the air scouting in July so that you can find a couple "corkers". Since we do not have roads to scout sheep outside park lands, you need to fly. Just like the guides.

All the other stuff is just stuff.

But you know that ;)

That's a great list Aron.

I would only take one camera myself.

Personally I like the Swarovski 10x32 EL binoculars better.

I have very little experience with the new Swaro spotter but I would probably opt for the 20-60x80 HD Swarovski to save weight.

I have to go with a quilt since I like it so much better than using a bag.

Edit to add:
I have never been on a sheep hunt so this is from other experiences.

Aron, have you worn the Triolet? I wonder how they'll hold up for a season in shale. I'm debating what boots to get for AK and I'm looking hard at Lowa's Civetta but the Triolet look a lot more comfortable for long approaches and general hiking.

Thanks!

I've used them a lot and they are very comfortable. They've held up well for me, but Critter Getter has a lot more experience with them than me (several years).

Shoot him a PM and he can let you know about them as well.

Damn it. I had just typed out like 3 paragraphs about the triolets and somehow lost it all... Moral of my miniature boot book was that the Triolets have been awesome for me. I have been running them for 4+ years while trying others off and on always looking for something "better". I've yet to find them... They have the perfect blend of stiffness, flexibility and durability for me. They're super comfortable too. That has caused me to ruin one pair with a cutting torch and burning some holes in them while messing around in the barn. I have had to send one pair back due to the gore-tex failing in the toe area (No, not the burnt pair!) When I first got a pair, I did not expect them to live as long as they do.

I've ran them on a couple sheep hunts and they get the normal cuts and whatnot on the rubber rand, but I've yet to find a boot that can come away unscathed. My main pair now have quite a few hunts and a TON of miles on them and are worn, but still going strong. I have just recently started to break in my "back-up" pair. I have a buddy that is an outfitter in AK and the Triolet is his go to boot as well.

Here is my current backpacking list which is pretty close to what I would run for another sheep hunt. I am probably missing something tho...
