What if something that was 'actually' real bad happened?

The hard part is that nobody knows what to do, myself included. Logic tells you that its not that bad. What we are seeing may be saying something completely different. I generally dont play the what if game and just take it as it comes. Am I prepared for a couple weeks of inconvenience, yes. Am I prepared for this to spiral out of control and the world "ends", nope. I plan to take it a day at a time and do what I can. If I go out in the first wave, well its been a good run.

I am in the same boat as you. I’m like 90% sure that everything will be fine. However I am very glad I moved back home to a backwater county and got out of Colorado Springs.

At the very least I think this is going to impact ammunition availability at least to us who have not begun to reload yet. So that’s what I started doing just buying more ammo. Will I absolutely need it probably not but better to have and need then need and not have. If nothing happens which I hope for, then I’m set for shooting and hunting for awhile.

On a positive note. This may mess with people applications for western big game. I’m still applying.

I think if we had something like the Spanish flu pandemic (covid-19 is not) or 1930s depression with a dustbowl added in on it. I don’t think we would handle that as well as our ancestors did back then. I believe you see suicides skyrocket and people just snap, just totally lose it.
Not saying coronavirus is a great time but it could be a hell of a lot worse.

You're absolutely correct. That generation was carved of stone for the most part. I teach history at the college level and two days ago watched a spoiled to death 21 year old, punch a hole in the bathroom drywall because he got a F on a research paper that had text message abbreviations (i.e. LOL, IDK etc) in it. This generation experiences anything like the depression/dustbowl and then you can really kiss your ass goodbye.

If a significant portion of people under 30 cannot function without a wifi signal, we're f***ed.

They are going to crash the world economy because of something that might kill less that 1% of the global population. What happens to the remaining 99%+ of the people?

That is nuts.
Maybe it is a play for a one world government?

call me a conspiracy theorist but I wouldn’t doubt it honestly, I think we have just begun to see the crazy of 2020

I picked the kids up from daycare one of the teachers was panicking, they just heard from someone On the school board that the drama teacher for the entire school system was exposed and they are talking about shutting down all the schools and daycares. One person may have been exposed and complete panic, they shut down another school system a few towns away and my wife has 6 coworkers in self quarantine

They are discussing shutting down PA schools tomorrow. I’m cool with it I like my clan all under one roof if the world is getting panicky.

IF this virus plays out by summer it should be an eye opener to prepare for far worse events of the future. We needed a wake-up call for many to see just how unprepared we truly are. Maybe this will bring us together as a nation to start working on what is really important for the country's long term survival and prosperity.

The population's dependence on cell phones, internet, just in time delivery and inventory practices are great tools but all that could be destroyed in just minutes.

It is just not virus'. EMP attack, cyber war, China, NK, Iran, our own infastructure, our manufacturing our own medications and on and on.

Will we learn? If the recent past is any indicator, probably not. We are too fat and happy. The last several of generations have largely avoided any serious hardships. History is irrelevant now that we are all so "woke".

Free tuition, free income, free, free ,free is what is important now. The government will provide. We are evolved don't you know.

I do believe there are still enough tough as rock Americans that will persevere, but the load is getting heavier.

It is not so much the total numbers or % of the population numbers that are bothersome. It is how quickly and easily it spreads and that many of the most contagious people will show zero symptoms. The concern, at least with logical rational people, is not only what it has done but how it has done it and it’s potential to do more.

Pretty good explanation of it here. The first 20 mins or so covers why COVID-19 needs to be taken seriously (not a panic but something to address. Leave it to Joe to bring on a great guest and do a great, informative interview

Edit: And I totally agree with the OP. Society will prove itself a fragile thing in the face of real disaster.

There is also a pretty serious lack of knowledge right now.

My wife is an ER Doc at a major metropolitan hospital. She is as frontline as you can get. Roughly 25% of their staff has been isolated due to an exposure to one patient who came in with an infection and during their stay it became apparent they also had the flu... 1/3 of the ER docs and 25% of the ER nurses at that hospital are over 60 and it's a 10% mortality rate in people over 60. That's 50 people and possibly 5 could die.

First case in the county at the wife’s hospital. Was presumptive positive yesterday, confirmed today. Our doc friend was exposed and is in self-quarantine

forget about running out of TP, what happens when we run out of docs...?0

Last count in Italy was 15,113 cases and 1,016 deaths. 6.7%. In terms of total population, yes, the death rate is well under 1% (68 million people live in Italy currently).

there is something weird going on in Italy. Just doesn’t make sense.

The State of Ohio just did that - shut the schools down and banned meetings of more than 100 people - no church on Sunday.

The average age in Italy is 45 in the US its closer to 38. The older the median age of the population the more likely the death toll will be higher.

Am I fully prepared if shit hits the fan? No. Am I prepared enough and have the ability to adapt and overcome? Absolutely. If the virus doesn’t kill me I believe my odds are pretty solid to keep my head above water. I’m just confused by the items that are hard to find from the store (toilet paper, cleaning supplies). I went for the water and food. Been stocked with ammunition since before the school shooting in Connecticut. Medicine would be the one main thing I could use for the family. Luckily we live in a rural area and have the ability to provide food and water through our own means and don't require a Walmart to provide. Cheers to good health everyone. Stay safe

Not just deaths, confirmed cases. Along with Iran, Korea, and Hubei China. They are outpacing everyone else.

Hard to prepare for an unknown.
I started several years ago by moving to a less populated area.
And let me say that I'm quite happy just being a home body.
I never have been one to congregate with large concentrations of people.
I work out of my home so I'm not really exposed to numbers of people on a
daily basis. I'll just stay home and ride this one out.
I may have to make a fishing trip here and there.

Because they have had it longer than anyone else. China had 4 new cases today. It has essentially stopped there. Korea's numbers going down as well. Look for numbers to start decreasing in Iran and Italy over the next two weeks. Numbers in US will continue to climb over the next few weeks then fall off.
