Jeep Rubicon Unlimited. I just drive it to the trailhead and backpack. I like the off-road capability in case I get an elk down and there is a relatively close Jeep trail I can pack the elk to. I also keep extra supplies in it because I only bring about three or four days worth of food when hiking out. If I don’t get into elk within a few days I’ll go back to the Jeep and drive to another area.

I’m in the 3rd gen 4Runner camp as well. I run a 98 with a salvage title and steel bumper front and back. Next on the list is monstaline the whole thing. I like the fact that I can throw a deer or whatever in the back or on top. Little blood inside, no problem…

Our family made the jump to the Ford Bronco and we absolutely love it. We were tired of getting dusted out in any UTV we owned plus when babies started joining the mix a vehicle made sense. It’s been a beast

For these late season desert hunts, the RMAX 1000 was awesome - I covered a lot of country in a couple hours that a truck would have taken all day….And it will haul and elk and 3 hunters and gear 😎

Those of you using truck toppers, what are you sleeping on? Cots, mattress, air mattress?
My cot that fit over the wheelwell finally gave out. I m gonna build a plywood platform on legs and add a foam pad under my sleeping pad that fits over the wheelwell next. Its nice that it doesnt eat up as much bed space that way.

Last year we used some blow up camping pads. They seemed to leak this year so we switched to some foam pads. Not exactly the most comfortable, so I'm looking at a different solution. If there is two of you, you will probably want to be above the wheel wells for a little extra room.

Took my 4 year old out to see how the Javelina archery opener pressure was affecting the mule deer movement in our home unit here in AZ.

We saw lots of deer in their usual spots. They were hugging closer to thick cover with all the vehicles and boot stompers chasing stink pigs in their habitat. Bucks were still chasing does as they just started rutting hard about 6 days ago.

We were able to stalk into 63 yards from a group of two bucks with 5 does before we snuck back out undetected. We also glassed up another solo buck and another group with 3 does and a dandy 5x6.

I caught a smile on his face in the Jeep mirror on our way into the mountain.

My first hunting rig was an '05 Camry. What a fantastic car that was. I bought it with 115k miles on it in 2015 and sold it over the summer with 280k on it. It crossed the 200k mark pulling a trailer to WY for my first western hunt ever. Obviously it was a daily driver conscripted into service.

My current hunting rig is also a daily driver that gets conscripted into service. '14 Subaru Forester. It's been a great vehicle as well. Bought with 115k and currently at 182k. Been as far as WY and to plenty of places here in NC including the OBX.

I've been looking at trucks though. Probably at some point this year I'll finally move into the truck zone. Still gonna be a daily though and not a dedicated hunting rig. One step at a time.

@np307. Have you ever towed with the Forester?
I try to limit it based on the CVT. American models in this range didn't have a trans cooler. I still have that trailer from the camry picture and I've towed a lawnmower or trash to the dump but nothing heavy. Weight limit is pretty small for these. One of the reasons I'm going to end up with a truck.

Roll a cot, fits over wheel well, bought a 3” memory foam mattress topper, queen size, cut in half, made a cover and sleep very well regardless of temps. Two fit in the bed of my f250 with 6” in between, storage underneath, strap to the tiedowns in the bed and remain in place driving offroad.
