What hunt doesn’t interest you?

I like real deal duck hunting just fine. I don’t do much of it, but it’s enjoyable. That being said, sitting in a pit with a bunch of fat, know-it-all, over opinionated former frat boys who have never eaten a duck in their life, with SEC football on the big screen and a personal chef making bloody Mary’s and bacon, is not the least bit interesting to me.

I was with you, until you got to the part about a personal chef making bloody Mary's.

I’m pretty equal opportunity when it comes to shooting stuff. I love DIY but haven’t ever really done a guided hunt mostly because I can’t afford it. I actually am starting to avoid hunts where I have to compete against other people (OTC Colorado elk). I can’t say I’m an avid turkey hunter but then again I’ve never really had the chance to hunt high bird populations. I love duck hunting, will sit in a tree stand without complaint, or would love to sheep hunt anywhere. Texas exotics are delicious and fun, public land elk and mule deer are a heck of a challenge. Would love to hunt Africa especially spot and stalk.

Auodad/Barbary sheep. They are the participation trophy of the sheep hunting forum

I have hunted Aoudad because I’ll very likely never get to hunt any North American sheep. I take slight offense to calling them a participation trophy. It was a challenging fun hunt DIY style in some amazing wild country, and when prepared properly they are delicious despite being 12 years old.

Don't feel bad some people are just elitists.

Hell I about wet my pants when I found out I finally drew a Barbary tag? Guess we'll see if it was worth all that excitement come January.

I’m a long ways from elite!!

What tag did you draw?

I find that a heck of a lot more interesting and enticing than some hunts that are out there. If I could find a way to get a big screen TV and satellite reception with college football in my elk camp, I'd never have to come home the entire season.

I drew unit 32/34. I've been applying for 10 years so plenty of excitement. Can't wait. Have a feeling it'll be plenty of challenge for this simple guy.

Having been on Bighorn Sheep and Mountain Goat hunts as a spectator/spotter/packer, I'll say that Barbary Sheep (at least on public land) is one difficult pursuit. I'm 0/2 myself so far. I understand the lack of appeal toward hunting introduced non native species but to me they are no participation trophy or poor man's pursuit as they say. Worthy quarry in my opinion.

Anything where dogs corner an animal doesn't appeal to me. I respect the hard work that goes into training dogs it's just not my thing.

I'm a meat hunter, if I'm not going to eat it forget it. The idea of any kind of guided hunt doesn't excite me, haven't done it so maybe I'm wrong (seems kinda like a cruise ship, which I haven't done, and won't). Not interested in just killing stuff like prairie dogs, etc.

When I was a kid me and my uncle killed a well-growed one with a stick while deer hunting....it was epic, highly recommend it.... :p
I've killed a ton of them but I wouldn't go looking for them. Some fire depts in PA used to sponsor snake hunts or "roundups" as a fund raiser. Guys go out with bags and prongs and hunt em up. Some still do it today but PETA's involved and I think they release them now.

I'd compare Africa to some of the fishing in Alaska. Sometimes things are just too good....or easy. You KNOW you will get your critter is just a matter of how big. Fishing in some rivers in Alaska until your arms hurt. Been to Africa 3 times and going back for free range cape buffalo. Don't judge what you haven't tried or seen in person.

Foxes. They’re such cool animals. Last fall while bowhunting elk a fox came running up behind me, in the dark. It came within 6 feet of me, and actually ate a piece of jerky i threw to it.

Some of the comments on guided hunts got me thinking. I am a DIY guy. I went on 2 guided hunts and they taught me that I could do it myself. Those hunts were 20 years ago.

I do plan on a guided hunt in the near future though. There are just a couple of experiences I need to have and I cannot do it myself. It is a personal goal to hunt moose and caribou in the mountains of Northern BC by horseback. I also have a lifelong goal of hunting mountain goats and while if I ever draw a tag in around the west I will go DIY I may just have to go guided in Canada or Kodiak to do it.
