What has changed with the silencer approval process that is allowing us quicker approvals?

One hypothesis I've heard is that when bump stocks got unbanned, the people at the ATF whose jobs were processing bump stock registrations got redirected to suppressor approvals. But I have no idea if that's true.

The ATF updated their processes/systems such that for individuals any "Proceed" from the NICS check is automatically approved. Trusts are still slower, but if it is a standard trust, those are moving much faster as well. If you do not get a "Proceed" on your NICS check, it can still take months for approval.

^They also made a few other tweaks to the process as well. Basically, bringing ATF IT systems and processes into the early 2020's vs the early 2000's they were stuck in.

I bought my first can way before there were bump stocks- it took 13 months.

I just mine back in 3 days, that’s why I was asking. Now if they just did away with that $200 stamp fee.

Conspiracy theory - they're speeding them up to gather a nice fat list of who owns what.

That or they're just trying to collect as much tax revenue to make up for what they're wasting in Ukraine.

It's an election year. They always become more helpful during this time. I will almost guarantee that if the Dems keep the White House and Senate things will change PDQ.

Seems the efile individual form 4, when you have a clean record, is only taking a couple days. At first I thought it was just a couple retailers that were getting these fast approvals but it seems a lot of them at coming back fast like that.

I wonder if people not having a lot of extra money to spend on things like this is speeding up the approval times because overall there are less applications for the ATF to process.

The faster approval times has lead to a massive increase in silencer purchases. To the point where it was really hard to just find a good one to buy. Supply seems to have just about caught up with demand now though.

The faster approvals happened with a huge increase in volume.

That makes sense.

The "why" really doesn't matter to me as long as they keep getting approved fast that's really all I care about.

I forget where I heard this, but I thought that the change that was made was they now don't hold everyone's approval because the person in front of them is being held up.

So before it would be that if you were #500 in line, and number #450 who is being processed in front of you had some sort of hold up, they would not process anyone's application (#451 and beyond) until #450 was complete.

Where now they are just holding up that one application instead of everyone's. Again I forget where I heard this, but that was my understanding of it.
