What did you do in the reloading room today?

I’ve always liked the idea of having an RCBS
Summit press to bring to the range since they brought it to market. I will inevitably try a set up to bring to the range. The only thing holding me back is when I see two others. Hard to decide between the three. Sinclair,Harrels or Summit. I figure the one that gives the least runout will win. One thing against the Summit is the handle not centered; which likely doesn’t affect the press too negatively considering they have developed a reputation for low runout. Still , I like symmetry when you are measuring thousandths (even tenths) of an inch. And I like those nifty and compact C types. They seem so practical. I love that about reloading in general. All the nifty compact tools ( miniature sized) we get to work with. Very cool indeed.

I used to have a Harrells combo press which is different than the press they sell now but has the same clamp. I think they're best with custom dies or just light sizing in general because the clamp isn't all that robust. I haven't used the Sinclair but I see them alot at BR matches but you're limited to 308 length cases. The Summit is the most versatile obviously.

At the range I've used arbor presses, Harrells combo, Rockchucker, and currently been using an RCBS Partner for a number of years now and it's by far my favorite of those four. It's a light duty press but robust enough for doing what I need at the range while light enough to easily move around. The Rockchucker works fine but it's noticeably heavier to carry around. I don't know the weight of the Summit but I'm guessing it's similar to a Rockchucker give or take so I'm thinking it's probably not the most convenient thing to haul arouond. For me though, I have a lot of hand dies and there's an arbor press conversion for the Summit so it could be a one press for everything even if it's less than ideal wieghtwise.

Loaded up some Berger 85.5 hybrids for my 223. 1:8 twist barrel but shot 5 different loads very well. Going to try a few grains more tomorrow because I never hit pressure. After that I’ll pick a load and try them at distance. All the loads were 2500 fps up to 2640 fps. Final loads should be between 2640 and 2700 fps. Pretty happy with that out of my 223 with 20” barrel. Loaded them at 2.310 coal and they fit just right in my howa mini mags. Probably will end up rebarreling in the future to a 1:7.5.

Loaded up some more 7PRC. 3 times fired ADG with a 168LRX and 68.6 H1000 for 3035fps out of our 22” gun UM built for us last year. Primer pockets are still holding up.

Then started brass prep on 22 Hornet as P Dog season is right around the corner. My kids usually go through 300-500 rounds a day.

I've got a m70 in 375h&h that really likes the Speer 235gr Hot core. I load it with 70.5gr 4064, rifle stacks them at a hundred yards. I have two boxes of 235gr Barnes tax that have been on the shelf for a couple years so I loaded up a dozen with 73.5gr of IMR 4895 gonna see if the rifle likes it.

Please post up your results.
I use the 88 ELDMs in my 223out to 1500 yards with great results and have used a heap of 80.5s but thought the 80.5s might have been asking a bit too much.

20260306_074107.jpgI built a little stand for my trickler setup on my lab scale. Also mounted the primer seating depth checker I machined as well. Seems to work pretty damn good. I just couldn't get myself to drop 850 bucks for the primal rights version, so i found a way to make one for myself.

Will do! I’ll post up some groups and then see how they end up at distance with the hotter loads. Hoping to get out today but may hold off with the 30-40 mph winds.

How well does the depth gauge work? Great idea and I’m always impressed with the things that guys are able to make themselves. I wish I had that kind of skill.

It works incredibly well. Way easier than trying to use the stem of a caliper sticking out the bottom. This way i know the primer at least has the anvil seated and the cup shouldn't shift forward from the primer strike.

Spun on a new 6CM barrel on my Tikka, so I did some load development today. H4350 and N555 are my tried and trued but gave some Superformance, Hunter, and 4831SC a go along with a few of the new 107TMKs. Superformance had a big ES of over 120fps but still gave a great group.

Ran a few more loads with the 85.5 hybrids with the 223 today. Never hit pressure but I found a load I’ll probably run with. I usually do 10 shot groups of everything but I had already done that with a few of these so I did 3s and then a 5 shot for a new load. The load at 2553 fps was 0.45” 3 shot and yesterday it was a 0.7”-0.8” 10 shot group. The 2613 fps load was 1.18” and the 2678 fps was 1.2”. I may try one more hotter load but with the low SDs, spread, and accuracy of the load at 2553 I’ll just roll with it most likely. The other hotter loads were good enough 10 shots but I’m just picky. This gun isn’t really a gun to shoot bug holes though. I usually shoot 73 ELDMs or 77 TMKs and the loads for those are in that 0.7-1.2” 10 shot groups as well. Excited to see how the 85.5s are at distance.
