West Virginia Dolly Sods _Muzzle Loader Hunt

Hi Guys.

I have a buddy who frequents the Dolly Sods down in West Virginia, and the country is gorgeous. Unfortunately, for me, he is not a hunter.

Does anyone hunt the Dolly Sods for Whitetail? My brother and I were thinking of doing a couple day and night backpacking hunt for late season muzzle loader. I think it starts like December 10. Looking for any intel you guys may have on the area.

Or... if anyone wants to tag along and show us around the area a little, that would be awesome as well!

I recently moved from Elkins, WV which is about an hour from the Sods. Honestly haven't spent much time in there because it can be really crowded for a wilderness area. Once the Forest Service locks the gates for winter, which should be already closed or closed very soon, the amount of people drops considerably. If you're wanting to hunt the open areas near Bear Rocks be prepared for deep snow drifts. Expect to wade through rhododendron and mountain laurel. The lower areas are typical big woods. Also if you are not dead set on that area, I would recommend Otter Creek wilderness and the Seneca Backcountry. All are withing the same general area of Dolly Sods and probably better hunting, though not quite as scenic. Look into getting a bear tag. I don't know what they run for nonresidents, but they were $10 for residents. You'll be there during the peak of the hound hunting season. Most bear hunters don't go where there aren't roads so the above areas act as refuges for them. Good luck and let me know how I can help.

I have hiked it some, but not hunted it. Always thpught it would be a cool hunt to do because of the scenery. And like cfc the guy said above, get a bear tag!
