I don't know if it's necessarily a turd, but the range XP model is overpriced for a basic 700 action with a plastic stock. And the chassis model is $1800 more than that... for a $1400 chassis that another company makes. It's something you expect from a smaller gun builder company where they order parts and sell the assembled gun with a guarantee. The new Rem700 Alpha 1 seems like the better deal, and it's got the extended magazine well now that the 307 doesn't because its cloned to the old specs. Unfortunate timing on that one!

It’s 2021 and your at a Weatherby R&D meeting. They announce the goal for a new action to be sold as a rifle and a “ builders” action. The caveat is it needs to uphold the tradition of making things well. They ask for input

Could be, but I doubt it. It will be interesting to see how the sales go for this in 2 years!
Hopefully, we will still have a country and be able to revisit this thread in a couple of years.
It matters not what new action they came out with, the critics will be there with equal fervor.

Their stuff has always been too high dollar for me but I assumed their rifles were really well made. Meateater had Adam on the podcast talking about how great they are and how their signature rifle is the best thing ever. Then I saw him on the show and his rifle all but jammed up after he shot a deer. How silly do you have to be to OWN the company and be like “our rifles are nearly single shot but I’m perfectly satisfied and ready to start promoting them on TV”.

Not everyone is a long range shooter so in their niche that is irrelevant.

It can’t be disputed that Weatherby cartridges are high performance cartridge, just not necessarily for the long range crowd, and that’s ok.

And not everybody want to be a Hornady bitch either.

They aren't "high-performance" cartridges anymore, they're just high velocity with all the extra handicaps of the era they were designed. Modern bullets and range finding capabilities have surpassed the need for the excessive velocity that causes just as many issues as it once solved. Even Wby has acknowledged that with the release of the RPM line that is much more tame and advanced than their standard lineup, they were just way too late to the game.

Not what I said at all. It just isn't generally successful to do something that other companies have already put out and made popular unless it's significantly better. The 30TC never took off because it wasn't much better than the 308 that was already popular, the 300RCM never took off because it wasn't much different than the 300WSM that was already out... The 6.5RPM has to compete with the 6.5PRC, we'll see how that works out.

The general rule may not apply here. They have a lot of features for the price point. They have the capital and the manufacturing capability to succeed. They can add additional variants as warranted easier than smaller companies.
If they are shown to be real shooters, that will help a lot. None of us know at this point if that will be the case.

I personally struggle to identify with the vibe they are pushing, but that’s alright. I do think it’s funny that the weatherby crowd seems like the same people that want to talk about flat bills and insta hunting about creed shooters and then you back up and look at what weatherby has become.

I scored a vanguard for cheap and set it up for my BIL, for the 250$ I paid for it it’s a nice little rifle. It’s about the least weatherby thing with a W on it though considering they don’t make it lmao. I feel like they missed a real chance to be a game changer with the 307 but that’s probably because I don’t want another 700 clone
