waterproof softshell

With all the softshell vs hardshell threads, thought I would share that the technology is now available for a compromise, and some companies such as Mammut (Gipfelgrat) and Marmot (Zion and Nabu) have begun making hybrid softshells using polartec neoshell (not talking about the neoshell hardshells like those from Westcomb).

Still going to want a true hardshell/puffy combo for the alpine, but the hybrids look like they might be a nice compromise for chasing bugles in the timber when you want the quietness and breathability of a softshell, but weather resistance of a hardshell. Appear to have some 4 way stretch also.

Wondering about durability of the waterproofness if anyone has been running one? The one I was looking at is the Marmot Nabu.

They just seem like stretch raincoats with heavy face fabrics. When an 8 oz/yard poly weave wets out the weight gain will be something to behold.

I asked Sitka your question and if they were looking into this. Below is their response.
"The Coldfront series is a Softshell. However, it's not as soft as most softshells. It has a higher denier/tighter woven face than most to increase durability. As mentioned there is a concern for the durability of a Softshell... the Coldfront is the answer!"

Northbranch is a great weather fighter, but even First Lite will tell you its not a rain jacket. Be another option to explore based on how much weather you think you might be facing. Its certainly a tougher face fabric than most soft shells.

I'll be fully testing the North Branch this weekend. Forecast is calling for all day rain and I'm planning on wearing this jacket as my rain jacket. My initial testing showed the DWR to be excellent but tomorrow will be the true test. I'll report back with the findings.

Hadn't really thought about that part....

Probably just my ball cap but maybe I'll pick up a boonie at the store before I head out. Any suggestions on a good rain hat?

I typically use a hood.. I was hoping you had a winner picked out! : ) Been eying several different felt crushers, but never had made the effort to narrow the search down...

There is a reason I wear that funny looking felt crusher. It can make a wool shirt fairly waterproof for a few hours.

Didn't get to complete my test this weekend and I realized as we pulled up to camp that I left my Northbranch hanging in my closet back at home. Ended up using my bright blue Marmot Precip rain jacket and was thoroughly soaked by the end of the day.

I am running a Rab Stretch Neo. I wanted something that did not have the noise of the true hardshell. So far I love it. So far it breathes great. Did a hike in the rain for a couple of hours with a pack with no issues. I hope it continues to perform well.

IMO the GEN 1 Kryptek Aegis fits this description. The Gen2 has a brushed face that holds water but the GEN 1 is an awesome lightly insulated softshell that is waterproof.
