Washington High Buck

I've only done a HH once in the Brothers Wilderness of the Oly's. Didn't have any luck. This thread makes me want to try again!.

Hunted for years on the eastside of the crest south of I90 and seems that you could compare the tails of three bucks and they would be anywhere from full mule coloration or full blacktail or mix of both. The PCT is just kind of arbitrary, animals don't abide by human established boundaries, especially since you are dealing with sub-species which have a tendency of cross breeding.

Clallam County has the most Boone and Crocket entries than any other county with a high buck hunt. Plus, you know it will be a true blacktail and not a bench leg buck if you hunt the Olympic Peninsula.

I spent alot of time chasing Blacktails in the Alpine Lakes when I worked on the Mount Baker-Snoqulamie NF. Happy to share what intel I have. Feel free to shoot me a PM.
Moose ! can you PM me? I'm too new to be able to send a PM haha

FNGs literally have no shame 😂😂 moose I hope you don’t pm this guy..
Dude what is the protocol 😂. Yes I’m a FNG not sure how this works lol. Moose said to hit him up he use to work in the unit I hunt. Not sure how else to go about it. 🤙🏽

1) Go to the FNG section and introduce yourself

2) demonstrate that you're on the forum for reasons other than unit snooping

3) generally find guys more willing to help you out versus the countless 1 post wonders that come out of the woodwork every Spring, never to be heard from again.

I used to live in WA and regrettably never did the high buck hunt. One year I was maybe going to go but the forecast called for heavy rain the entire time so I skipped out.

I have seen some decent deer right near the pacific crest in some units during summer backpacking trips though. Check your maps for areas that look to hold good forage and cover and you will find them. It’s absolutely beautiful up there so worst case scenario you have an amazing trip.

These smaller deer pictured let us walk basically right up to them.

They don’t come down until the snow gets too deep meaning several feet
If it’s a mild winter I have pics of them staying above 3500 ft elevation

Hoping to go for some nights of backpacking with a rifle in case I get lucky this year -- Olympic Pen. Likely brothers -- but if anyone here wants to give me some hints on whether to go elsewhere, I'd be absolutely stoked :) Same for hints on how to do Olympic High Buck in general ..
