Looking to see what people consider a really warm base layer bottom. Wanting to add another base layer option to my kit when the temps get really cold

i did not find anything warmer than 2 layers ... one merino first to the skin then any polartec added to that. but that will not for walking or hiking hard very long ...

I’ll run merino base , stone glacier helio mid layer fleece waffle style material then de havilland, if it’s really cold or glassing I’ll throw on first lite puffy pants they are old, don’t remember what they are called

I think you’ll be best off doing 2 layers. I would do a merino mesh next to skin then something like a grid fleece or an Alpha over that.

Next step would be something like the Kuiu Kenia pants

Is the merino mesh effective for static hunting?

The very first UA cold gear they came out with is (imo), hands down, the best wicking base layer out there…I usually follow that with with UA 4.0, FL kiln or furnace, and I also use a Kuiu Pro Merino. Also have a Kuiu Strong Fleece 290 thats really warm.

Are the strong fleece 290 to bulky to wear when walking

It’s not terrible…think sweatshirt with no hood.

And if you’re taking about the pants, I have those too and they’re not to bad but I still hunt 100% of the time so I’m only walking it to my stand

I tried using a light merino base and then a cheap pair of fleece wader pants. I only got cold enough twice this past season to use this setup, but I thought it worked well. I found the wader pants on clearance for $18, so it is a cheap option as well. I wear bibs, I don't know how it would work with pants. Down to 25, I use Sitka 330.

I hate being cold. I should live in Florida instead of N Idaho w/ a couple years in Northern Minnesota :)

I have figured out a specific recipe that works for late season goose hunting in layout blinds, ice fishing and plowing in sub-zero.

Merino wool base layer, heavy polartec fleece wader liners (rei or reddington), and an impervious outer layer (water and wind proof gore-tex pants).

If you still hunt, the sitka fanatic jacket/bib combo handles it. I wear their heavy merino zip off bottoms and random pants to walk in then put on the fanatic set.
