Hey guys there is a Vanguard tripod and pan head on Camofire today. It's an Alta 204AP and is $57.99. I know you usually get what you pay for but I've got a long list of gear I'm still trying to get. I don't have a spotter. Would just be using to glass with binos. Do you think this might be worthwhile or keep saving for the pro master or slim?

I can't comment on the Vanguard but I picked up a Slik mini II with ball head for $50 new on ebay. It weighs half of the model you are looking out but not a panhead. Just food for thought.

I did not realize you could find any of the Sliks in that price range. It says the Vanguard is 3lbs 4 oz. I'll probably do a little more research before I buy.

That Vanguard will handle more weight and is probably more solid, thus the weight difference. For me, like you, only mounting binos on top, the lighter option with less weight capabilities was worth the cost savings and weight shaving in my pack. I'm sure there are some other tripods similar to the Mini II that are better and in the same price range. I forgot to mention that the Mini II does not extend to a height that will allow you to stand and glass, kneeling, squatting, and sitting yes. Part of the reason it is so light.
