I would bet my life that there is only about 5% of you that really wants to “understand.” The rest is complaining with an attempt at hiding behind “trying to understand.” It’s why anytime someone makes a valid rebuttal, you attempt to take the discussion in another direction. It started as “thoughts” to “I want to understand” to “people shouldn’t have to fear doing something illegal” to “cougar hunts” to “wolves in Colorado” to “complaining.”

You disagree with the closing of shed season until May. Admit it and move on. At least at that point your being honest.

I like looking for sheds and I wish Utah would put a season on it permanently like Wyoming does.
I admitted I disagree with the closure. And my main gripe is the wording “gathering”=“locating”. How are you gonna say only 5% of me cares. I posted this topic to have a conversation about this issue. I wanted peoples thoughts before interjecting mine and then I did and some how that’s me changing the conversation? I guess I thought more people would take issue with their definition of “gathering”= “locating” and “marking locations”. So I admit I disagree with the closure and you want that to be the end of the conversation? Or can I and more people continue to debate it?

No authority is telling you that you cannot recreate outside. It’s the intent of seeking out sheds during this closure that the DWR is trying to nip.

It’s been 5 years since I lived in UT so maybe things have changed but I never understood why their WMAs that were purchased for big game winter range habit was ever open to recreation during the critical times for wildlife.

The vast majority of the ones for big game are, if I am not mistaken.

In some places but there seems to be a lot that are not. Here’s quotes from UT closures of WMAs that are important elk and deer wintering habitat, per DWR. I know some of them very well.

Seasonal Closure:
None

Seasonal Closure:
No seasonal restrictions are in effect. However, to protect wintering deer and elk, you should limit any wildlife-disturbing activities from December 1 to April 30.

Seasonal Closure:
Access roads are open to motor vehicles from May 1 to November 30 and are restricted between December 1 and April 30.

Where are those? All the ones within about 50 miles of me are closed Jan to mid April.

I would suggest looking south of that 50 miles. I did look into on a few up by you and saw the season closures you mentioned.

I haven’t ever looked into any of the ones farther south. I try to avoid anything further south than Mantua.

I think shed hunting is a little different than hunting an actual animal. Are you going to start advocating we have to buy a shed hunting license and only be able to pick up 1 a year?
yes. 100 times over. with a season and bag limits. only 1 antler set a day on your daily bag limit with 5x possession at your house limit. Must buy a shed hunting permit that is half what an elk tag costs.

They come off live animals therefor fish and game should be able to govern them and regulate them and should be able to use the sheds as income generating since so many sell them for profit.

I'd support a yearly shed season ( annual closure until may 1st) with all the whining about this closure coming from such a tiny group of utah dissenters, I see alot of support building on the board to make it an annual thing.

Do you REALLY not see that apparently the DWR realized that if the language was ambiguous, many shed hunters would still visit their same spots, still bump animals in their wintering ranges, and either mark the sheds or cache them for pick up May 1???
Can you REALLY not see that?

They are closing areas in California to “looking at wildflowers” now.
Really it comes down to just too many damn people in the world. But that’s a different discussion altogether.

Just ignore any shed or deadheads you might see. Don't walk over to them to "locate" where they are laying and certainly don't pick anything up, "gather" it to your possession.
Just go look for your mt lion.
Stay off the wintering grounds, lions wander far and wide.

You're right, it is. When I'm pursuing one buck I'm not pushing a hundred other deer around on winter range at the lowest energy reserves they have all year for someone to get a 4 in dog chew out of. That antler will still be there when I start putting bear baits out in May, of it isn't I'm not going to lose any sleep over. Certainly not going to whine on the internet about it. People lose their minds over antlers.
