Unpopular opinions

I thought of some more of my unpopular opinions!

1: Swarovski optics are over price by about 200% of their actual performance value. Swaro quality peaked with the SLC line, which is now sold under the Kahles line overseas for a fraction of what we were paying here in the US. Swarovski is just taking advantage of charging people for the status symbol of the flying pigeon logo they have. Their optics are NOT the top of the pile, no matter how hard everyone tries to justify it.

2: Kennetrek boots are hot garbage, may as well super glue a 2x4 to the bottom of a pair of moon boots and hunt in those. Comparable levels of comfort under foot and support up the ankle.

3: bow hunting is nothing but a status symbol. Some of the least ethical and courteous hunters I’ve ever met/seen have been archery hunters. Can’t tell you how many guys I sold a bow to THE NIGHT BEFORE ARCHERY OPENER who went out the next day to hunt. I would argue that lots of bow hunters are less ethical than rifle hunters.

4: Toyota pickups, new or used are ALL extremely overpriced. And that’s coming from a guy who loves Toyota stuff.

5: if you have to “size up” or “size down” in a pair of boots to make them “fit,” they don’t fit. Buy a different boot. If you normally wear a 10 but have to buy an 11 or 11.5 to be comfortable then you’re buying the wrong boot.

Oh and liner socks are just a gimmick meant to help people who bought the wrong boot to begin with.

When it comes to gear related opinions, most guys have an opinion to justify what they choose. I would be included in that statement.

To the original point in the first post, I do believe the high-end glass is worth the money. Until I had some, I didn't realize what I was missing. I can glass 15-20 minutes before and after others in my group. The glass lets me see a lot of detail I can't see in other glass when looking side by side.

Ashby bowhunting studies don't apply to modern bowhunters. Current modern archery harvest rate is about 50% harvest rate and Dr. Ed Ashby rate over 640 animals is over 99% of his animals were recovered. Go figure that all the hype of fast long range light arrows leads to decreasing harvest rates.

What if I bait fish and I don't even drink? Extra lazy I suppose lol. Napping in the sand waiting for a pole to start jumping sounds pretty great right about now 😁

I think you had a typo here. "Is less than" sign goes <

I love eating all wild game, but I would completely reverse that order of preference. (Except field fed whitetail. That is better than elk and mulies)
Oh my, I hunt my property in MO and was ALWAYS told that corn fed WT's were the best. Well, that is wrong. For some reason, all the farmers around me grew soy beans this last year. I killed a pretty decent buck and didn't have high hopes for it table-wise. It is the absolute best tasting deer I have ever killed.

You simply cannot hunt with a heavy rifle. Your arm will fall off or you will tip over and tumble down the mountain to forever be lost.

Any gun that has more recoil than a 6mm is ridiculous and guaranteed to make you shoot so terribly that you will never kill anything again due to your flinching and eye-closing.

And has been said before you have to go 20 miles in to kill.

Yes sir. Wish I had bought alpha glass 20 years earlier.

1: every cartridge invented after 1894 was unnecessary. Cartridge design peaked with the 6.5x55

2: hunters get way too worked up about predators. Shooting a coyote during deer season every 5 years isn’t “saving fawns”, and wolves aren’t the bogeyman some people claim.

What are some commonly held beliefs in the hunting world that you don’t agree with?

Personally I’ve always thought that “buy the best glass you can afford” was just clever marketing by optics companies. Mid range glass is perfectly suitable for almost everyone and can save you thousands of dollars you can spend on tags or other gear
So true about every piece of gear in every niche, glass, rifles, arrows, golf clubs, bikes, purses, vehicles and everything else. Marketing and the placebo affect is a power we really do not understand. It works to separate us from our money but does not improve performance anywhere near as advertised

Coyotes put a big hurt on whitetail populations thus you should kill each and every 'yote you see.

I don't buy it, at least where I live in SW Wisconsin. Almost every animal has predators, which is good for that animal - it weeds out the sick and weak. We have lots of whitetails in my area and IMO the coyotes don't put much of a dent in the overall population. In fact, I believe we have more whitetails than we need, so good for the coyotes to help thin the herd.
