You’re saying you could bend a Faxon pencil barrel? Or are you saying that you could flex the barrel at the upper receiver/barrel extension and nut joint?

Sorry I’m not trying to be annoying.

Are you saying the barrel would bend/flex in the middle of its length, or are you saying the upper/barrel joint allowed the end of the barrel to move.

Two very different problems.

Sorry to hear your experience with a pencil barrel wasn't ideal. It's good to hear feedback that doesn't align with our own experience, as it helps us learn. I for one have not experienced what you have, as my several ULUL builds (including with a faxon pencil barrel and a shaw barrel which is even lighter) have been around MOA. Probably 1.25moa would be conservative, but I have days when I can keep it under moa, so I'm sure I'm the weak link not the rifle. If you decide to take another plunge into the ULUL world, I'd be happy to share my build list.

I did not expect it to cycle like a Tikka... But I did expect to be able to cycle it.

Lucky my local gunshop had the cheap 'one screw per side' leupold rifleman rings on the shelf as I was rushing to get a load developed for elk pack in. It's only slightly heavier and seems to be just fine. For the $20, I might just have the packgoats carry a spare. Gotta love 300 pounds of capacity!

Not sure if I'm allowed to link it here.

Its not ULUL in his build, but the way he cut the bolt and added a handle looks more in line with a traditional bolt gun. I might give it a whirl if I can find a cheap upper locally.

Now that's cool. Like a sturdier/cheaper Solo (I have bent my charging handle screw from too much force seating a round). Gonna have to try it...

Anyone interested in building a tough (forged?) Aluminum handle for this? I'd be all over it for $50!

Good idea, maybe Solo wants to jump on this and we could send in an original one for the mod. I'd want to keep it either left or right pull for extra rigidity though. I guess it would be nice to seal off the left side for debris and precip, and rigidity 🤔

Edit: I've gotta add that I REALLY like this set up, because not having a big slot closer to the chamber will help with rigidity (not that it has been a problem) but mainly not having crap enter the action from that side will be really nice!
 
ima try it. ordered some fab steel off amazon and a basic bcg/upper to mess with. I have a lefty kid and a righty. So that reversible bolt handle idea might be a good option. or maybe just make two!

He didn't get very specific in the video or comments. Did you get any idea if the 'bolt handle' or knob was something that is sold by someone? I'd like to get a steel one like he had and have a machinist copy it in aluminum
 
He just threaded the steel 90 and added an aftermarket bolt knob. You could probably lengthen the gas key portion and maybe not even have to cutout the upper much (but risk punching yourself in the face).

Bolt flying into your face worries me a little, but with the way an AR goes into battery i don't think it would happen. The "reach" to the bolt looks real nice for a short guy or kid, especially compared to a bear creek that is very far forward.

Saw this yesterday and it looks like a good option for these types of builds, they even offer a grendel bolt face so maybe it extracts well.

Straight pull

There was something from the apparently now-defunct Atl opp shop (above) like this, and the Kali-Key. I think @Taudisio was even talking with his gunsmith about something like this (???).

This is kind of a simplified version of the Kali-Key idea, with the bolt handle moved forward to actually make cycling more ergonomic. If I could source the handle, I'd gladly make one on an upper with a dremel. He's using the same NBS upper here as the original Solos were using. I think the mod would be easy to do with a dremel.

The main issue I see is keeping it in battery with just friction. He's not really demonstrating any real field use as one might see in hunting.
