Ultralight Ultralight Rifles

9mm uppers were the earliest slick side uppers with pic rails and no shell deflector or port doors. In essence, they’re the simplistic upper to begin with but magnesium or poly will be lighter. My issue with the Mag Tactical uppers were sloppy tolerances.

Press fit barrels are the way to go but you can’t always make that work. Instead, epoxy bed the barrel to upper.

A little shorter than the BCA, but feels quite a bit nicer to run. I had hoped that being aluminum it would be lighter but it’s .15 oz heavier than the factory one…. Oh well. This BCA upper isn’t the lightest option anyway.

I think you two might be talking about two different approaches. Correct me if not; wouldn't be the first time I was completely incorrect.

I think @Trackselk is (or was) referring to making a "rear-pull" straight-pull with the handle attaching at the gas key spot and being pulled from the charging handle spot (milled or cut on one side of the charging handle slot to move the handle forward a little).

@StupidLightweight , you seem to be talking about a "side-pull" straight-pull and cutting out the side to make way for the side-pull handle attached to the bolt carrier, ala-Solo...?

Thanks, I should be more clear. I wasn't really worried either way on the charging method since it doesn't affect my choice of uppers, other than if I want side charging I'd just stick with my solo.

Well, the local range was closed, so I took a steel plate out to the desert to get a rough zero after rebuilding my rifle and test out the B&T Tiger.

I shot around 40 rounds in 5-10 rd strings of fire. In short, I'm impressed.

I only shot three rounds without ear pro on, but it sounded quieter than I remember the same barrel and ammo combo with either the heavier AB A-10 5.56 or Griffin Armament Optimus Micro with taper mount extension. Very unscientific, I know, but the first impression is very positive. Considering the weight and cost (paid $400 and got a $100 SS gift certificate rebate), even moreso.

That's pretty cool, but an alternative you might want to consider; I got a 10/22 right at, or under 2 pounds with red dot and suppressor. 6" acculite Barrel ships this week.

I have the rifle and load a 60 gr TMK to 2300 fps. It hammers broadside deer, and is very compact and easier to carry than the ULUL, even though they weigh about the same. Not crazy accurate but suitable.
 
The Stowaway is not in the same league as these .223-class ultralight builds—not even close. Is it a clever design? Yes. But it's still a pistol-caliber single-shot, so unless you're plinking subsonics at the range, a .223, .300 BLK, .350 Legend, or any other rifle round will be more effective for hunting.
 
I tried to buy some Roam Magnesium parts for a AR 10 project and to try them out for a future UL build. My bank denied the purchase on my card. I have recently had difficulty with them on other parts. Can't say much more but my account has enough to cover it and I should be able to buy what I want when I want it. It is time to talk to the banker and perhaps look to another bank for the future. This isn't BOA. I might expect it out of them. Be Well Brothers, BG.
