Ultralight Ultralight Rifles

Hmm, is that with a 16"? I guess the barrel I was using wasn't broken in yet, but I'm holding off until I get the new hereinaz barrel, since I'm just wasting expensive components. I was aiming for below 1062 fps to be subsonic at 10 F
Yep, 16" BCA barrel. My barrel has less than 100rds so far. I'm near sea level.

I shot 3.1 and down in .2 gr increments.
2.9 and above weren't reliably subsonic, but did seem to group okay. Probably good enough for close range rabbits or whatever
What bullets are you shooting? If you're specifically after subsonics, a somewhat heavier, crimped bullet might help (?). That should at least help keep pressure up and velocity down with the tiny amounts of powder in the case, as long as the longer bullet can be spun fast enough to be stable leaving at ~1,000 fps.

How does you BCA shoot in general with your normal loads?

I'm currently using 46gr flat point. Going with a heavier bullet does make sense. I haven't shot it that much yet, but my normal 223 plinking reloads shoot surprisingly well in my opinion. Near or less than 1.5" at 100yds for 10 shots.

Yeah, my 46 grain small game load with 4 grains of Trail Boss probably isn't subsonic (never checked) but isn't much if any louder than a 22 LR and shoots about 1/2" at 25 yards.

It might be worthwhile just increasing your charge in increments to see the effect on accuracy and see if you find something that shoots well. Seems like as you go up in charge, you'll usually find the best accuracy node somewhere. 1 grain difference in these loads can make a big difference in how they shoot.

Also, different powders seem to make a difference so I'll sometimes try several. I guess everything above applies to handloads in general.

In other ULUL news. I’ve been messing with some Frankenstein magazines to see about single stack possibilities. This iteration is pretty successful so far with the 223 wyld. Hasn’t worked on the 6x45 because the necks are too wide and drag in the 223 cz 527 magazine I used for the internal single stack. It fits 2.40 COAL. Didn’t feed the 2.40s great for angle, but the 2.36s fed fine. Could probably manipulate the feed lips to change that. With my chamber I can’t go much over 2.31 anyways so not currently an issue. Might get a little more serious when I get a barrel chambered for longer seating. About a half oz heavier than a duramag.
I saw .410 AR magazines and thought they are single stack and wonder if they would be the right option to mod for a long COAL. The .410 case is slightly larger diameter (and with a case rim) than a .223 case but maybe a steel mag you could bend the lips down a bit. Something like this:

In order to get more length in the AR magwell as a single stack you have to have the bullets running up the track in the back of the magwell. I don't have anything in my hands, but I think any mag built for a rimmed 410 is going to be too wide to fit in the track in the back of the magwell.

FYI: Midway has 88 ELDM factory seconds for 14 cents per bullet. You MAY be able to use 20MUSA for 20% off (doesn't work for my account, but if it works for you please let me know and let me add some stuff to your order!)

First critter with my ULUL. It was fantastic to carry around compared to my traditional rifles. The 5x prism was easy to get into for this quick shot. I had to have set the call 50 yards from him he popped up so fast.

77gr Norma golden target match ripped a huge exit hole in the hide. Gonna put together a dedicated semi-auto thermal predator setup next with 55gr VMAX in mind. I’m definitely building it with some of the UL components I’ve learned about in this thread though. Hoping to stay sub-6lbs with it. And I’ll swap the folder on this one to it, go carbon to lighted this rifle up more.

I approve of everything in that photo. Rifle, optic, dead dog, mustache, Pendleton round up hat. 👍
