I know this should go in the classifieds, but I’ve got two of the bear creek barrels that I have no need for. Let me know if you have any interest. Never shot or mounted. Now back to our regularly scheduled program.

On a note about magazines, finding a lightweight 5 round magazine is tough. I ordered the PMAG 10 rounds and they are actually lighter than the promag 5 round. A little frustrating but that is life. Hoping to post up my masterpiece with its weight list soon…but I’m doing mine in ounces not grams 😂

Looks like BCA has bolt action stripped uppers available now (including BCG) for $187. Code BUCK for 10% off.

EDIT: Any idea if these would take Hornady "bolt gun" loads?

Great timing, thanks! Got one ordered for the NAS3 project.

And just to update where I ended up on that for those that are interested, after using a case gauge versus my comparator, I found that the shoulder angle was off just enough to make the case effectively .001" too long, or over Sammi spec. This made the headspace about zero, which after firing, left pressure against the bolt face, and thereby wedging the action closed.
It probably isn't enough force to be a problem with a bolt action, so here I go again in search of the ++p 223...
I'll inform Shellshock, and hopefully they can adjust their process to make these fit better. They cycle fine in a gas gun where the bolt unlocks in time, and or the peak pressure (case expansion) is less.
*At these pressures the cases are a one time use situation as no way to size them exists.

Here’s a few more weights of item you can buy online and not have to build. I’m not as handy as some of you guys so have to buy parts, not make them.

This is the cheapest and lightest folding adapter I could come up with. It’s from “Military Overstock”.
IMG_4325.jpeg
Brigand Arms Handguard. Light, but very expensive and I regret putting it on my build. Not worth the money. Better value options out there that accomplish the same thing.

This is a nice little premade buttstock. From CP Firearms. Again kind of pricey but already made and pretty lightweight.

Hogue 15 Degree Handle - Best value grip out there by far. Also only thing that is lighter is the XLR.

I FINALLY finished mine, with the exception that I’m probably going to cerakote the barrel just to “black out” the gun. But ultimately they can’t even compete with some of the weights that some of you guys have done. Am a little disappointed in the weight but overall it’s my lightest gun and my most compact to throw in the pack. I went with the folder just to help make it more compact, but it did add 4oz.

Also a HUGE THANK YOU to all of you on this thread that have thrown out tips, ideas, links, etc to help make this happen. Really appreciate it as I’m a guy that has never built an AR ever.

4# 15oz with a BIG suppressors and fully loaded with 5 rounds.

4# 4oz with muzzle brake and fully loaded with 5 rounds.

I put a Burris 5x little scope on it that weighs 10 ounces. Wish I would have put something different on it optics wise, but I’m not sure what else I would do other than the SWFA ULUL but that would actually add 2-3 more ounces just due to rings. If i could find another one, I would likely do that as I have it on a few of my other guns and I’m used to it.

Last question, I think I need to polish the feed ramp cause I’m having a hard time getting it to feed. And these magazine seem to be too tall because the carrier group catches on the magazine follower. Any tips or ideas to fix this?

Thanks again everybody!!

Is that an amend2 magazine? Just pay attention to where the bolt is hitting the mag and file it a bit. And for hand guard, a carbon tube is definitely the way.

Agree with the carbon tube. Probably my biggest regret about the whole build but was past the return window so I was kind of stuck.

The bolt seems to be hitting the follower on every single magazine I put in. Metal, amend2, pmag, you name it, it hits the follower. I can’t imagine that is the norm? Any suggestions on the fit? I wouldn’t think I need to modify every single magazine. Seems weird to me.

The SB BTFA folder is the lightest I'm aware of. Can't say if it's the cheapest though.

The MDT Carbon grip is the lightest I've found. I was able to cut down a Hogue 15degree (with some Skeletonizing) to within 2 grams of the MDT weight. But the MDT is certainly not cheap.

It is the hold open feature for an AR-15 so you know when your magazine is empty.

You are correct that is lighter by 0.6oz. Didn’t even know this existed and never came up in all my google searches. But you are also right in that I was able to get two of the knock offs for the same price as the one. Kind of spendy.

And you are right, I struck out again with my knowledge of products. MDT beats the XLR by .19 ounces per advertised weights.

In this game it does get expensive chasing ounces.

I thought it was this as well but I can physically see the bolt catching on the magazine follower in every single case. Am I doing something wrong with the solo 300?
That is what catches the bolt. The Solo doesn't have a lockback function, just the hold open based on the magazine follower. You can ramp the follower down (file the plastic from the rear towards the front to make a transition) so the bolt will slide over it of you want to be able to run the bolt closed with an empty magazine in the mag well but all magazines with the "fake bullet" on top of the follower or the bump in the rear will block the bolt from closing.

You have any recommendations on magazines that will work better than others?

Even though your hand guard was pricey think it looks badass. That's worth a few dollars, right?
