Do you know what the ID of the Wiland hand guard is? Wondering if it will work for a gas system or only with it removed.

Gimme a minute & I'll go give 'er a quick coat of measuring.......

It measures 1.577" ID.
It also doesn't sit exactly centered around the barrel.
Looking at mine from the muzzle, I'm pretty sure you'd get a low-pro gas block in there.

Haven't handled a Wiland specifically, but none of the PCC specific handguards have provisions for running a gas tube, not that I've ever seen, anyway.

There's nowhere to run a tube inside and through the barrel nut, and the receiver port for the gas tube is often partially blocked by the barrel nut/handguard itself.

I did see an example of a tube run on the outside of a Kaw Valley PCC tube and wrapped in some sort of nomex or something, but that looked like a very poor solution. Not sure how the tube dropped back into the upper.

...Or, I might be completely incorrect on the Wiland! ...I'd like Robtattoo to confirm the possibility

Weighed a tango down at 2.4 oz and an Ergo 25 degree at 2.9 oz.

My B5 Type 22 13 degree grip weighed in at 2.2oz with hardware. Just another option.

The last time I spoke to them was, I think, August. Sounded like they were close then so not sure why it's not up yet. Could be they're just extremely busy with making barrels in general (?).

I'd keep checking with them and letting them know you're waiting. Could be a case of the squeaky wheel getting the barrel. I guess the glass-half-full view is that it's happening at all which is in part thanks to you guys giving them input. Probably the more they hear from people the better.

It wasn’t quite the “test” I was looking for (yardage and shot placement wise), but just one 87gr vmax worked as intended.

You can always get high temp paint and it'll be good.

I should have used the high temp paint like you suggested. It’s starting to flake in some spots after last weeks shooting and then I really noticed it while looking for deer. I have to figure out if I’m going to strip it, sand it, or just add more of the same paint and continue to do so until the end of time. Decisions, decisions.

I can’t state it enough, the light rifle is a dream to carry around the woods. The only issues I found when holding it by hand for hours/miles is when it’s barrel forward, the weight is on my pinky, I switch to barrel backwards and the weight is on my index finger. With my “normal rifle” I would be switching hands and going over the shoulder from fatigue, and that rifle is only 9 pounds suppressed/loaded. The other issues are the farrowtech would “catch” waist high sage/juniper branches, and it’s a little loud while closing the bolt on a round. Just little things that I took note of that others may want to be aware of.

I noticed the same thing with the Farrowtech while hunting Kodiak last year. The Smoke Composites closed stock might be a little better. A collapsible is definitely better.

I've taken to hunting with a round chambered on a potential approach or still hunting with these because they are a little noisier than a bolt rifle, though I've done that with bolt rifles as well I guess. The extra noise may not matter, but I'm almost always hunting solo anyway, so not an issue really to carry chambered.

A short recap of the hunt-
After a pile of other plans fell through, this was a solo meat hunt and the first legal buck was/did get shot. I tried to get it on video, but the living animals didn’t cooperate and stand still. 10 minutes left of shooting light, I went for broke and beelined straight at them when they went behind cover I wouldn’t be able to shoot through and didn’t think they would clear before it was too late. They came in to 180 yards, and I jogged the last 100 and shot the buck after he was doing the “mule deer freeze” at 80 yards once he looked away.

Bullet entered the back of the neckBullet crushed the spine and exited the throat, bigger than a golf ball exit hole. He wasn’t bleeding much out of it, so I widened the hole with my knife to about dollar bill sized and cut both jugulars-again, meat hunt/meat care. Before cutting, he wasn’t trying to get up and was agonal breathing.

I got about half of my neck roast.
This has given me new found confidence that the 87 grain vmax at my average muzzle velocity 2688 is not “acting like a varmint bullet”. Estimated impact velocity is 2540. I’ve been told the 87gr vmax will stop in a prairie dog. Clearly, a deer neck muscles/hide and large/hard neck bones were no problem. I did not see a single bullet fragment left behind. With this sample size of one (still have another tag for this year so more testing to come) I think this setup would be great for a person that has 6mm restrictions and reloads.

I sort of inherited a .223 AR pistol and that thing is LOUD even with a suppressor. This thread gave me the idea to flip the gas block around to see if the lack of "port pop" is enough to make it somewhat close to hearing safe. I'll just manually cycle it for a few shots to test the theory.

If I like how that works I'll probably get some fiberglass parts, make it a manual side charger and turn it into a really light and compact "backpacking" gun. Basically light enough that I'd carry it when I wasn't really hunting but capable enough I'd have a decent chance to kill something if I saw a bear and started hunting. With my barrel length I think I could get 200+ yards. But if the little stinker stays that loud I might switch to a 300 Blk or something a bit longer.
