Two parter, Browning X Bolt and Round Choice

If you’re worried about the ammo availability like I was 7mag xbolt hells canon long range…. Absolutely love that rifle

Lol goes to Reddit and can’t find the answers he wants…. Comes to forum with same questions… argues with everyone.

What’s that saying about if you run in to one asshole he probably was an asshole…. But if everyone you run into is an asshole…

Good luck op, go with the .338 lapua and get all that energy you need bruh

Edit: also regardless of caliber please limit yourself to 300 yards and in… something tells me that would be a good idea for you.

I said what I was looking for in my original post.
I would go 7 PRC, I always opt for less recoil so of the two id go in that direction. i have a 7mag i will eventually rebarrel to 7prc. I think the new browning x bolt 2 stocks are worth the upgrade. did you see this review? they look promising. https://rokslide.com/forums/threads/browning-x-bolt-2-speed-7-prc-field-evaluation.356804/

they have a suppressor ready version too if you want short and threaded. if you can orderammo online too that push me towards 7 prc. the factory federal eldx has beeter speeds and consistency and easier to get online. if you cant order online id do my due diligence at my local sporting goods store.

He sure ran into a bunch of assholes in this thread. The man asked about two specific guns. He read the other threads. He chose something different.

Sometimes narrow questions lead to narrow answers. Anyone who tries to tease that out is an a-hole?

7PRC vs 300WM - meh. Plenty of threads on that or similar comparisons. OP, if you seem focused on energy and drop, I'd compare the two ballistics tables and make up your mind. No one is going to tell you something on that comparison that you can't see yourself. I haven't looked on ammoseek.com for either cartridge, but it would tell you more about availability than anyone here can. And I'd bet both are more widely available than the SAUM.

I can't comment on the X-bolts from personal experience, but some of those distinctions seem like analysis paralysis. And I'm not throwing stones - I live there. Just pick a setup that fits in what you want to spend and move on. You won't be too wrong - at least within the parameters you have decided upon.

Ok two part one sort of feeds into another. Been on REDDIT and got no help, except for everything I was asking about.

First off 7PRC or 300WINMAG? I see 7PRC has slightly better ballistics, I dont know enough to write home about but is better with less recoil and the gun weighs slightly less with a shorter barrel. However ammo accessibility is really important and to a certain extent price. I had a 300SAUM and is virtually impossible to find. Been hunting with a 300WSM, however finding that is almost as bad, and the ammo I put into the gun hasn't been in stores for 2 years. So with that being said the PRC being out a year or two, I dont think anybody can know which way it goes. So really leaning towards the 300 Winmag.

Next is gun. Getting an Xbolt, but there are so many options. One there is the mountain version, just not sure Im getting a whole lot more for grand. After that is the Xbolt 2 a must after the Xbolt? After that, there is the speed, the speed long range, and the sporter. I like sporter as the barrel is shorter like 22 or 24in, however range matters to me. Also is the recoil hawg worth it over the 360 brake. See some people complaining about gas back in the face on the recoil hawg.

For a little context this is for my out west gun. weight and length somewhat matters but not a first priority over accuracy. We routinely are shooting deer from 3-500yards. Comfortable range right now for me is probably up to 700. Wouldnt mind working my way up to 1000 at some point.

No im not reloading, no Im not finding 5k worth of ammo and stocking up. Want to keep it to these two options.

Only relevant comment I have after everyone else’s thoughts is that by going with a 22” barrel you’d be robbing the 300WM of a decent amount of speed.

I actually have a Noreen 50 BMG that might need to find a new owner soon if op is interested. 8lber of powder too

I own 2 x bolts and I am very happy with them. I have a hells canyon western hunter long range in 300wm and a Max long range in 6.5CM. The 300wm has the 360° brake and the 6.5 has the hogg brake. I may switch the 300wm over to a hogg because it defintly reduces muzzle jump and the 360 brake has loosened up on me a few times and made a nightmare out of range days when I can't figure out why my gun is shooting like poop.

As far as uses, the rifles are definitely tailored for different uses. The max long range is noticbly heavier and less enjoyable to carry around in the mountains. My hells canyon 300wm is my go to mountain rifle. It's not overly heavy but still heavy enough to suck up some recoil.

I can't speak to 7mm rounds too much but I'm big 300wm fan. I'm shooting monolithic hand loads sub MOA @3015 fps. They definitely put a hurtin on game.

I'm currently contemplating picking up another one in 28 nosler....

Thanks for something of help vs the others. Can’t ship ammo to my state. While I have seen 7prc, my concern is 5-10 years it going the way of the dodo, like I’m said I’ve bought the latest rage before and it didn’t survive.

I see the sportier version with the short barrels. Which I like because of maneuverability, but wonder on accuracy on. 20-22in barrel vs 24-26barrel with 7pc and mag rounds

Yeah im guessing 100-200ft per second loss with a 22in barrel. I have a short mag already in a 22 and have always been happy with it, have taken deer out to 700 yards with it, although the short mag in theory is supposed to compensate for the shorter barrel.

I like turtles

I think a 6 creed and 7 prc will cover your basis for just about everything, however if you ever brown bear hunt alaska a guide might not let you use either.

For the use you are considering, with good bullets the 7PRC is way way more than enough. With bad bullets it's still more than enough.

A few questions...
What other rifles do you have?

How many focused practice rounds do you shoot per year (reading wind, shooting from field positions, etc)? In the last few years I've changed my views on long range proficiency. I think a guy ought to shoot at least a thousand, preferably 2k+ rounds per year if he wants to be shooting 600+ yards at game.

Have you considered suppressors? They have been an amazing improvement for me, and actually a big driver for me in overhauling my long range rifle setup.

I (and many others here) have moved to smaller cartridges, and to heavy for caliber match bullets like the ELDM, ELDX, and TMK (Berger too, but a little less popular). My long range big game rifle used to be a 7mmRM running 180 Bergers. It was an absolute hammer at long range. I've gotten rid of it for a .243AI for my main long range big game rifle, zero regrets and zero chance of going back at this point. Maybe (slight maybe) something like a .25PRC or 6.5PRC if I ever decide 900 yards on game isn't far enough.

That 7RM was fine to shoot with a good brake, but I have grown to hate shooting braked rifles. Double ear pro, ear pro in the field (especially Backcountry), being that asshole at the range that blows everyone else's stuff around, hunting with kids, all of it sucks. That rifle with a can was just too much to reliably spot hits unless I was shooting 500+, and I'm not willing to give that up.

Lots of reading and several dead animals later, and I'm all in on 6mm with a 108ELDM or similar being great terminally above 1800 fps which puts me at 900-1000 yards effective terminal range with that .243AI. You can approach that with a 6CM. Your 500 to 700 yard goal is easily achievable. My hit rates (especially from field positions) out to 1k+ have gone up substantially since making the switch. My animals are just as dead as they were with the 7mmRM. I shoot more for less money. Win win win.

I'm not trying to pee in your cheerios here or tell you what to do, just trying to share what I've learned and experienced over the last several years since I had pretty much same opinions as you when I bought that 7RM (I very narrowly chose it over a .300WM, with a plan to run 215 Bergers).

No advice on the rifles, I don't have enough experience with those models of X-bolt to say anything meaningful about them.

Ive got an x bolt speed in 300wm with the recoil hawg brake. Loud as hell but nothing blows back at me when shooting. I would say it brings recoil to about the same as a 308 level. I considered the shorter barreled version but didn't think the velocity loss was worth it. I would only get the short barrel if I was going suppressed. Not a regret on the purchase at all.
