I just bought a new truck and I am looking for feedback on what to add next with regard to storage in the bed.
On my last truck I ran a ARE topper. I live in western WA so it was nice to have to cover for the rain etc. However it limited what I could do with the truck as far as hauling and getting into the bed etc.
So on my new truck I am considering a few options and would like peoples feedback on what they think is the most functional choice. My family hunts and fishes, snow ski's and camps, so I am taking all these activities into consideration. I want to protect my gear and keep it from being stolen.

1. Folding Tonneau Cover

2. Folding Tonneau cover with a bedslide

3. Canopy

4. Canopy with a bedslide

5. Decked system- my truck has an 8 ft bed so if I add a decked system I would likely add a tool box in front of it as they dont make a decked system that is 8ft so you are left with about 19 inches to work with up against the cab.

6. Decked system with a canopy and flush mounted tool box

7. Nothing, leave it stock :)

Thanks everyone for the feedback!

I have a trifold cover and dont like it. I liked my rollnlock on my last truck.

Ive looked at decked but it seems a hassle unless you get a topper then it seems very handy or maybe under bikes.

My goal is to store and protect gear from the elements and theft 95% of the time and have full awkward use of the bed the rest for horns, lumber, trees, furniture etc. i dont carry any offroad toys like a quad in my bed.

I like camper shells/toppers. I also have a 12' utility trailer if I need to haul something that won't fit with the shell on.
I had a Decked drawer system for about a year and ended up taking it out and selling it. While nice and pretty well made, it just took up too much cube space for the convenience it offered. Also, my dog crates wouldn't fit...

Folding Tonneau cover highly recommended. I have been happy with my Bak Flip MX4.

Second the Bak Flip. Like I can lock things in the bed and fold it up for hauling bigger things. And fold up to protect the rear window.

Love my BakFlip, keeps everything out of sight and dry but a quick fold up and I can load a 4 wheeler or plywood, whatever, and have full use of my bed.

I’ve had roll-up tonneau covers on my last 4 trucks; on my current truck I put a Leer 100xq- after having a topper I don’t know that I could own another truck without one. I have a enclosed trailer that I use for wheelers or anything else that I need to haul that won’t fit in the truck bed.

I prefer having nothing. That way I can put 4 wheeler in back or do take a load to the dump. When I go into woods I can throw what I need into cab.

Soft roll up the most of the year, then around November I put on the hardshell canopy for the winter..It nice to have everything dry and extra room during snow season.
I finally found a small tool box so my quad will fit with it mounted
in. Saw fits in between the box and bed so no more rattling around and now I carry a 20in saw20210606_182247.jpg20210606_180131.jpg

You actually see my canopy stored on its rack, just back under and set it on to the truck works great. next is to clean up the bed and do a spray in DIY bedliner

Put me in the MX4 group too. I place my gear inside large coolers under the tonneau cover. Nice and discreet.

You can mount a Kodiak Canvas truck tent with the cover on. Covers all my bases. I travel places that get tight. I sometimes need to load the bed with a lot of stuff, the BakFlip protects the rear windows from sketchy loads and is easy to raise & lower.

I have a decked drawer with a softopper. I love the Decked system and haven’t had enough time with the Softopper to give strong opinions but I like it so far.

The only drawback on that combo is that it’s a pretty tight sleeping space if you want to sleep under the topper.

I generally leave the Softopper unattached because I constantly have to load/unload cattle feed and fence posts etc. And put it back on when I’m going on a trip or expect inclement weather. It takes no time at all

I think the decked system is badass but you lose your bed height. With the being said I think the topper added with it would be the ideal thing.

BakFlip MX4! Keeps stuff in your bed dry, secure and easy to get to when you need it. I bought a twin memory foam mattress, cut about 4" off of it to make it fit in my back seat (folded up) and it works perfect as a truck tent. I'm about 5'10" so it works pretty well, spent many a night back there.
