I just picked up a Razor 11-33 x 50 (angled eyepiece) and would like to pair it to with a lightweight tripod; preferably relatively sturdy and steady

I don't think I need anything overly tall????- I don't anticipate the need for standing

I see Vortex also sells tripods, but a little hesitant as some of the reviews weren't really glowing

also I think I want a pan head (that's what I'm used to), but would consider a ball head

any suggestions would be most welcome, thanks in advance!

I have that same scope in the straight version. By the way I love its capabilities especially for its size. Anyway, I run mine on a Vortex summit ss-p along with my razors on the uni-daptor and I think the combo is perfect. It's pretty light, although I'm sure there is much lighter out there. But for the money, I dont think you can beat it. I've been using mine for 4 years now. Zero problems with it.

I am a big fan of Velbon tripods if for nothing else they are lightening fast to set up and adjust. Twist at one joint and you have control of all sections. They're company, fairly light, and I find them to be very stable with lighter spotters.

thanks Gents! Muley- glad to hear you're liking the Razor! Looking forward to putting it through it's paces

I just read a review done by Luke on one of the Velbon's, he confirms that the Vortex SS Summit is one and the same, simply rebranded :)

someone in older thread mentioned the Sirui t-025x as a lightweight tripod to consider, I looked and the reviews are good, but the price tag is high ($220-ish), at least in part due to the carbon construction; I read a review on the t-025x from an individual who ordered both the t-025x (carbon) and the t-005x (aluminum) the weight difference was only 4 oz- the t-005x also got pretty good reviews and is $100 less- hmmmmmmm

Slik 624 or 634. Outstanding tripods, great stability, lightweight and good pricepoint. In my world, the tripod is one of my absolute essentials in my pack and I run the 634----never even look at anything else.

Randy-thanks I'll add those to the list to check out, a little pricey, but cry once right? :D

One thing I like about the Velbon branded tripods over the vortex is you can get a little heavier duty. The summit would be the lightest duty Velbon that they make. If you bump up a model or two you will increase the weight slightly but in my opinion the are for more solid.

You'll find a lot of guys here on the slide run them. For what you get, the price is actually fairly decent but I totally get that you have a budget. I have had quite a few tripods including the velbon, vortex, Nikon, manofretto, promaster, before I settled on the slik 634. Love it and I also shoot off of it. FWIW I use the outdoorsmans mini pan head.

Slik Sprint Pro II is a light and inexpensive tripod (was $90 when I bought mine) that works fine sitting, with the legs kicked out at 45 degrees (second notch) and only one or two leg extensions out (it has 3). It solidly holds my angled Swaro 65mm for sitting use and I like the ball head that comes with it.........YMMV. I drop the center extention post too as it adds weight and isn't very stable extended. The center post unscrews in seconds.

Note that I have had to shim the aluminum QD plate due to wear from a lot of use. Simple.......put a piece of Gorilla tape (about 3/16' x 1") on the plate on the angled side opposite the locking cam......or even on the cam contact side. Fixes the loose head issue right up. That is the only issue I've had with the tripod in 6 years of use.

thanks for all the suggestions Gents! I ended up ordering a Sirui t-005x for under a $100 (w/ the C-10x ball head), it's under two pounds even though aluminum (packs to 12"), I'm going to try it without the center post and probably remove the smallest legs as well

if it doesn't work out, I'll try stepping up to the Slik

here's my lightened Siru T-005x- center section removed (simply unscrew) and lowest legs removed, 30.7 oz with head
