Hello everyone, I'm looking to put a Trijicon Huron 3-12x40 with a 30mm tube on my Tikka 7mm Rem Mag for elk and Mule deer. I'm not much of an open turret guy, so, looking at this one. Has there BDC reticle so that will help at the distance. I'm going to limit myself 500 yards. I'm hearing the only downside of the Huron is the eye relief. Has anyone had issues with this particular model?

I had mine on an open muzzle 30-06 for about 40 to 50 rounds. Above 8x it was not ideal at all. Even with good form it felt like it was coming very close to my eye socket on every shot. After that I had it on a suppressed AR-15 223 for a while and that was completely fine.

I just mounted my new Trijicon Huron 3-12x40 on a 6 ARC this weekend.

I did not notice any real difference in eye relief vs my other scopes. Of course, I did not even consider recoil when I set it up b/c the 6 ARC isn’t going to scope me.

Hopefully, I’ll get that rifle sighted in soon. I really liked the simplicity of the reticle for where I hunt (under 400 yards).

I have a 1-6 huron and a 3-9 huron. Neither of those scopes has a tight eye-box imo. Ive never looked thru the 3-12x40, but I did hear someone here on rokslide say it had a tight eyebox and my impression is that person would know enough and have the breadth of experience to say so. That person also complained about the glass quality, and my scopes are also fine in that regard. Its entirely possible its a different scope, or I suppose its possible their scope was broken. You might just order one where you can return it and see for yourself. (Eta that person has also weighed in here)

Have you guys tried the Accent or Credo? Are they any better with eye relief?
Ive used:
1-6 accupoint, credo and huron
3-9 credo and huron

So far it looks to me that each “size” scope (1-6, 3-9, etc) has the same eye relief across the different scope families (huron, credo, accupoint, etc). But each size scope has a slightly different eye relief. Ie all the 1-6’s are the same, all the 3-9’s the same, but the 1-6’s are different than the 3-9’s. I havent been able to compare any of the higher magnification models. And this is just from use, not a side by side comparison”test”. But thats my impression.
Several of trijicons scopes reflect incorrect eye relief figures on the trijicon website as far as I can tell, and their call center has been unhelpful on questions related to this. So your only real resolution is going to be comparing them yourself.

It is so hard to find a scope that tracks, is clear and durable without breaking the bank. I was a Leupold guy for years and have a bunch of the older ones. They used to be built so well.

Looking at between $500-$700
Sorry if this sounds blunt. You said you want closed turrets and a BDC reticle for hunting out to 500 yards. That's just not ethical, please don't try it. I have a home range with 8", 10", and 12" steel plates out to 500 yards. I tried through several range sessions to make that BDC Huron work and it's just not fit for purpose. The first open turret scope I bought that actually worked correctly (not the VX-6s) was a Trijicon Credo 2.5-15x42 and after my third range session with that the 500 yard plates were almost too easy. Learning to dial is so much easier than being effective at long range with a BDC reticle. If I were in your position, knowing what I know now, I would get a SWFA 3-9 and never look back.

Have a 3-9, 2.5-10 and 3-12, no issues with eye box or eye relief. Eye box is tighter at 12 but not unusable, Better then a Leupold 4-12 that I had once upon a time. For the price and my purposes they fit the bill.
