Training for The Uphill Athlete Scott Johnston New Hunting Podcast

Has anyone done the 28 week Backcountry Hunt plan for $80? Would love to hear a review.

They just released it a little over a week ago. I purchased it because I may be interested in incorporating some things down the road, but my main focus is trail running and I already do a lot of endurance/muscular endurance work influenced by uphill athlete and Evoke.

The plan includes a lot of hiking/aerobic work and has a nice progression on weighted packs. It is nothing earth shattering, nor should it be, but it provides good structure to follow. There are also some strength workouts included.

Could most of this be done with a minimal home gym? Treadmill, dumbbells, bench, Kettlebells?

i bought the 28 week plan looks solid. used them 1 on1 last fall and I was the best cardio shape id been in years. I compared this to doing CrossFit 5-6 days a week and was just brunt to ash. lol

the template program is very zone 2 walking volume heavy. The lifting I supplement my own as I'm very experienced there. Maybe it gives a somewhat negative feedback, but my hunts are less than 2 weeks a year. I spend more days on cruises a year than hunts so there is some vanity programming in my plans haha

I need a bunch of zone 2 work to build my aerobic base. Spent hours researching this stuff. I'm looking at 5 to 6 days of varying zone 2 durations and adding 2 full body strength workouts per week. Along with a mild calorie deficit while maintaining my ideal bodyweight protein levels. It's gonna be a grind. Zone 2 work can be seriously slow and tedious but I'm gonna trust the process. I picked up a garmin chest band to track heart rate. I don't trust my Garmin watch to accurately track it.

I did a 12 week coached program with the same Evoke coach last fall. (John Frieh of Evoke)

I looked at the example week for the 28 week course. Many of the workouts seems to be identical.

I would recommend the 28 week course. I am going to buy it and start it. I'll let you know more after I try it for a while...

Considering what we spend on hunting and fitness, $80 seems almost free... even if we only get a few ideas, it seems like money well spent.

I bought and downloaded the $80 program. Here are my thoughts...

First and foremost, this program will definitely work. If you follow the program, you will extremely ready for a real mountain hunt. Your leg and full body strength will be great and your endurance will also be great.

Other thoughts:
- It is extremely cheap. $80 is basically free
- It is well documented. It has enough descriptions and attachments to guide you through every workout
- It does a nice job including leg, core, and upper body strength
- It does a GREAT job including mountain hunting-specific workouts and acclimation.

But... there is always a but...
I looks quite time consuming. It asks for about 9-12 hours of work each week. Much of that is weighted hiking/climbing for 1-3 hours at a shot. That is why I'm convinced that it would do a great job. If someone spends that much time doing hunting focused exercise, there is no doubt in my mind that you'd be extremely well prepared. But i don't know if I have that much time or desire. It does seem fairly easy to modify a few workouts or drop 1-2 per week to manage your other commitments.

I plan on doing the program as closely as I can but will probably miss at least one workout per week and will probably modify another workout.

Is it still just on Training Peaks? Or did you get an actual pdf, template, word doc, something like that? I got one of their mountaineering programs a few years ago and didn't realize it was only viewable through Training Peaks - either the mobile app or website.

The training was good, but I hated the format. Having to view it through a calendar, always needing my phone with me for a workout. I need more apps like another hole in my head. I just want something simple where I can skim ahead and see all my workouts for the week quickly, print it out for reference if I need to, not have to toggle between calendar and workout views and learn a whole new program.

Are their training programs anything special? I have the book and it basically tells you how to lay out a training plan with their methods. What does paid coaching get you that you can’t make yourself (assuming you have trained and made programs before and aren’t a total beginner)???

Years ago CTS (Carmichael training systems) who was coaching lance Armstrong started doing online training plans for people, you’d pay by month or by plan depending on goals like bicycle racing, endurance mountain biking, triathlons etc. a girl I knew spent a lot of money on that and had all her plans printed out. When I saw them all I could think was that I could have slapped a plan like that together in 30 minutes. Maybe o should have been coaching people and charging 200.00/month.
You can fully lay out a program with either of their books, the training programs are more of a time-saver for people who don't want to spend the time doing that. It just simplifies the process and hands you something you can immediately get started on. But I think they're pretty open that all the resources you need for it are in the books.

I watched this last week and got a ton out of it. I have re-upped my intent to hike up the mountain several times a week as opposed to my previous routines that left my core lacking. Thx Cliff!
