I went and looked at 4runners today and as much as I wanted them to work right now they are just a little on the small side for me. If it was just me and a buddy on a trip it could work or just drive around town but for where I am at right now I need something with more hauling space.

After talking to the wife we realized that the amount of time we have everyone together on family trips that require 4*4 has been almost zero. So we are going to make the van work for now for family trips and that leaves me open to getting a new truck. Yes it can’t fit the whole family but we have managed for 12 years with out a suburban so we are going to try and hold out a little longer. The price of a burb just is to much for me to tackle

Going to look at a 4 door Tacoma as a new replacement to my z71. Should have enough hauling space for what I need it to do. Should be able to find what I want under 40,000

I’m sure the 4 runner is great.

While I’m not an off raider per se, I do get off road and get into some challenging terrain. I’ve never been left un happy with my two sr5 Tacoma with decent all terrains. I have a 19 4door long bed sr5, average about 19 mpg in town, 23-24 on the highway.

Try getting your deal online. The strategy is to know exactly what you want and send it to the online sales rep of any dealership you are willing to travel to. Take the best offer and send that out again. Keep repeating that cycle and eventually you will be at someone’s rock bottom... without sitting in a showroom.

My 2003 4Runner with v8 is going strong at 204,000 miles. Solid vehicle. My 2018 SR5 may get sold to my daughter. And if so, I’ll buy another. Had a 1998 that I should have kept too.

We just got a new 2019 TRD off-road for my wife a few weeks back. With her POS Honda Pilot trade in we paid 33,000. That’s with pleather seats. I haven’t driven it and we don’t have or need the 3rd row any more. The limited was nice but she wasn’t into the wood grain accents interior.

Find someone in your state that will offer you a lower price. That's what I did on my last 2 cars I bought. I used, I believe, Truecar.com and used the function to get bids out to 150 miles away from me. I'm in San Diego, and there was a dealership about 150 miles north that made a lowball offer. I brought the offer in and the salesman of course said that the offer was bogus, that if I drove up there they would change the offer, bait and switch. I said "BALONY!!!" I'll drive 150 miles to save $1, 500. The guy went and talked to his manager and came back and offered me the car for $150 over the other dealer 150 miles away. I said "DEAL" I ain't driving 150 miles each way to save $150. Cheers Bill

Aw, man. I thought you were in South Dakota. :cautious:IMG_20191004_170902.jpg

You can get a rear locker with the TRD models and the KDSS suspension. These were two big pluses for me.

I would suggest going all out and getting a "Limited". Some nice additional features! It's tough to beat Toyota for dependability and longevity. Toyota may be more $ but you'll always get a higher price if you ever sell them.

My preference for a hunting vehicle is a Tundra extended cab with a topper. I have a Bedrug liner in my bed plus topper..which is super posh and comfortable. I merely line it with a tarp when hauling leaves and other stuff. It's my home away from home on extended trips. The bed is large enough that there is plenty of room for gear plus area to sleep in the back....a great mobile camp! I get around 16 mpg in the city and up to 20 mpg on the highway. That's excellent for a 5.7 L motor! My guess is that I get as good or better gas mileage than most 4 Runners/Tacomas. It's definitely worth it to me to have the additional elbow room! There's plenty of room in the back seat for tall grown-ups or kids....even with the extended cab.

Don’t overlook the Lexus GX460, known as a LandCrusier Prado outside of the US. They are about the size of a 4Runner.

The basic consensus seems to be that the SR5 is every bit as capable off road as a Z71 or FX4 truck. Everyone agree to this? I'm in the market for a newer vehicle and am torn between an SUV or ext. Cab truck with topper. Very few off road version 4runners around here but plenty of the SR5s.

Id love to know how you're getting 20mpg on the highway. Best I've ever done with my Tundra was 16.5 - 17 with a tail wind. A trip to Wyoming last month I averaged 13mpg round trip, head wind both ways. I guess if I drove 55mph on the highways id get better mileage..... Toyota trucks are not known for their gas mileage, period.

Around 20 to 22 mpg is the best I've done. I went back and edited my original post and said "up to 20 mpg." I'm in the 16 to 19 mpg range on a regular basis on the highway....which is still pretty good for a full size truck and 5.7 L motor. I've never gotten under 15 mpg with mine....knock on wood! Mine is a 2008. A buddy of mine has the same motor and gets similar to yours. I'm not sure if Tundras come in different front ends/transfer cases or other things which may change mileage?

I'm getting over 18mpg in my 4Runner in town. I hit 20 on the highway. Not as good as a Prius, but cheaper than my 3/4 ton diesel. Lol

I actually had my heart set on a Tacoma with a camper shell. I didn't like the way the new ones drove, so I bought the 4Runner. I already have a truck, so a suv wasn't a big deal. I wouldn't have a suv, if I didn't have a truck.

In the mid-size, body on frame SUV market...the 4Runner is the only game left in town in the new market. Explorer and Pathfinders have turned into unibody "crossovers" and aren't really the same animal.

Base model SR5s are plenty capable off road. The TRD with KDSS suspension is very, very nice and the TRD PRO is mostly eye candy upgrades from the "Off Road" model. KDSS is excellent at soaking up the rough stuff on washboard roads if you run a lot of those.

Our 2018 Off Road averages about 20mpg- almost entirely on 2 lane "highways". No real interstate type highways in my area. The 4.0 V6 is dated, but pretty bulletproof at this point in its lifecycle.

In all trims, the 3rd row seat is mostly pointless- small and hard to access. If you need 7 seats, buy something else.

I have a 13' SR5 Premium. Has all the bells and whistles except a rear locker. The 3rd row is kinda useless, but I have a kid with friends so if we need to use it it works out great. I've been on 3 trips this year to hunt from central MIsourri. I've been to SE texas pig hunting with 2 dudes in it and 2X to NW and SW corners of Nebraska on goat and muley hunts and I've been absolutely thrilled with it. We lay the seats flat, toss the expensive and soft gear inside and put the coolers on the cargo hitch carrier on the end. I've gotten 20-23mpg avg on all the trips, only had to use the 4x4 once and we just sleep in the back with the window rolled down. When I solo hunt I have gear on 1 side and my sleeping bag on the other. Could literally live out of it.

I have 1 kid and 2 dogs, so when the family is out we use the 4R and I have enjoyed it more than my F250. I looked at Tacomas, but they seemed to hold prices higher with more miles around here, get worse mileage and I had a 99 4R I loved to pieces, so this wasn't a hard decision for the driving and hunting I do.

It's a 13 SR5 Premium, I paid $22K in KC with 92k on it. 17,000miles later I've only changed the oil.

I have the 18 TRD off-road. I really do like it but it’s hard to not have a truck bed after running them my entire life. I drove it from MA to Idaho last year with a buddy we put everything on the tray and up top put down the seats in the back so one could sleep while the other drove and only had bows and food inside. I stacked the totes on top but halfway through the trip I put them on the tray and strapped everything on top of them. It’s a nice hunting rig minus the bed but I put a few deer in the tray last year. I’ve set up my tripod and glassed off the rack when I couldn’t get a clear shot off the road. Brought it in a few rough spots never had to use anything other than regular 4wd I haven’t even tried the rock crawl

The sr5 is way more capable than most full size trucks, that being said the first mod should be new tires.

I’m a pretty hard core Toyota enthusiast.

The TRD model is going to get you the factory rear differential locker and ATRAC. I believe the SR5 will come with ATRAC wired, but you have to buy a switch and it will work. For a hunting rig you would ideally want both. ATRAC is basically traction control while in 4low. It works incredibly well, often on our expedition type trips ATRAC gets me over obstacles 90% of the time. You can add a locker later but it’s expensive.

I have an Fj cruiser and have for 11 years. They are even smaller than the 4Runner, but can be outfitted in different ways to make them amazing for getting into the mountains. Mine has turned into a tiny camper more or less. Hot shower, comfortable bed, fridge and freezer.

The Fj has the same engine, the 1gr-fe and they are turds. Super reliable 4.0, but not fast. Plenty of torque for off road where it matters to me. Il
