I’m a pretty hard core Toyota enthusiast.

The TRD model is going to get you the factory rear differential locker and ATRAC. I believe the SR5 will come with ATRAC wired, but you have to buy a switch and it will work. For a hunting rig you would ideally want both. ATRAC is basically traction control while in 4low. It works incredibly well, often on our expedition type trips ATRAC gets me over obstacles 90% of the time. You can add a locker later but it’s expensive.

I have an Fj cruiser and have for 11 years. They are even smaller than the 4Runner, but can be outfitted in different ways to make them amazing for getting into the mountains. Mine has turned into a tiny camper more or less. Hot shower, comfortable bed, fridge and freezer.

The Fj has the same engine, the 1gr-fe and they are turds. Super reliable 4.0, but not fast. Plenty of torque for off road where it matters to me. Il

Bought a new TRD premium for the wife about a month ago. Drives great and she loves it. The other SUVs we considered sat too low to the ground and would be closer to mini vans. Don’t think you could go wrong with the SR5 as they seem more than capable. She just likes the bells and whistles of the TRD.

You can just leave it on, and it will only function in 4wd low. It’s when you get a tire hanging in the air on some off camber stuff or even hitting a small patch of mud or ice climbing a trail and the rear end will make a strange, almost grinding like noise. And it’s effectively delivering power to the tires that need it, and it works extremely well.

I should add that the newer TRD models have CRAWL control. It can get you out of being stuck if you aren’t winch equipped. If you look on YouTube for “CRAWL control in sand” you will be amazed what it does. They bury the trucks up to the frame rails, turn on CRAWL Sand, and without touching anything the trucks climb right out.

Oh I know what it is for. Just haven't had the truck in anything real nasty yet. Maybe with our first snow tonight. Everything in Nebraska is dirt/grassland ranch trails so nothing to insane. Worst we did was cross a creek and my cheapass milestars got slick so we just used 4HI and let it idle out.
