4Runner or Half Ton Pickup?

Right. So you can’t do the same things…without a trailer. Again, that means it can’t do as much in stock configuration, head to head, period.

What if I load stuff in the bed of a pickup and have a trailer connected loaded with stuff? The answer is…more stuff moved than an SUV.

Here’s a question: why do construction, railroad, oil, forest management, etc. companies or agencies use pickup trucks in their fleet? Because SUVs are for hauling people and cannot do what pick up trucks can do.

I don’t hate SUVs, but you guys can’t convince me they’re more useful.

Those guys also ain’t using them for hunting, fishing, camping and over landing like most on this sight.

For my life style and my farm, I can do everything I do with my pick ups with an suv and have more use as a do everything vehicle.

Granted we have a pile of vehices so it doesn’t matter, I could haul all the family in the truck or gx but is cramped, so we have a van, but if I could only have one for everything would be a gx / 4 runner hands down. To the op if you can only pick one, get a 4unner and never look back.

Haha ya and you’re not doing it with a 1/2 ton either. Been there, tired it and it’s sketchy at best. Anything over 10-12k the Cummins would come outta the shop for heavy work.

I’ve had over 25 3/4 trucks from building race truck and engines and being heavily involved in the diesel world. Daily drove 1000hp trucks for years because I loved the power and boost. You’re correct in the goose neck and 5th wheel statement but that’s what they are made for. Same arguement, my 25 tundra is more comfy then any of my common rails even on full Carli or king set up. Ones made for heavy loads and were built for stupid power and one is a luxury 1/2 built for tech and smooth rides. Both truck, but super differnt. With you’re logic just but a dually so you can hual 30k….

For the op only having 1 vehicle a suv is a no brainer imo.

Never owned a leasbianroo but I know they won’t compare to Toyota reliability. For wheeling their angle suck compared to a 4 runner, Land Cruiser, etc, but I’m a yota fanboy.

I work for myself so as little as possible for the 6 months of the year when I prefer to be hunting!

I kicked around this decision for quite awhile and went with a truck. No regrets. Biggest factor was dry lockable storage of the SUV, but a crew cab truck pretty much solves that problem.

My 2 cents:

• Skip the 4runner - both of my friends that bought them wish they had spent the money on a pickup. We get the same mileage, but I have more room and utility. You get more for your money with a truck.
• Consider a 3/4-ton vs 1/2 ton. You're looking at the same purchase price (if new) yet HD trucks hold their value better. Newer HD trucks are getting what my 2013 F150 gets for mileage, yet I'll never have to worry about payload or towing.

Grab a used topper if you want more lockable storage. I bought one for $300.

My bow hunting partner runs a 4 Runner.
It goes everywhere we take it.
Including chaining up all four in 3 feet of snow.
Climbs like a dream, and gets decent gas mileage.

Sold my old F 150 - mostly due to fuel mileage (you would shudder to see what we pay in BC!).

Bought an X-Trail, put a lift kit and over-sized aggressive tires on it.
35 miles to the gallon, and goes everywhere I point it.
Carries a full camping kit, and 2 whitetails easily.
Last year, the kit and 1/2 of this moose:

I am entirely unlikely to go back to a pick up.
The SUV suits my needs quite well at this point.

It sure is nice sleeping in a 4runner vs the bed of a truck when it’s cold out. Reaching your arm out of the sleeping bag to crank up the engine to get the heater going is priceless.
