I am in the market for a tonneau cover and thought I would ask for some first hand opinions. I have had a soft rollup in the past but I really like the added security that a hard rollup offers. Have also considered the tri-fold but don't know anyone with one.

Do you have a locking tailgate? That will help a lot on determining which tonneau works best.
I've had 2 Extang Solid Folds. It's a trifold. They don't lock but can't be opened if the tailgate is locked. I like it because there are no rails to mount to the truck. If you want to remove it simply loosen two clamps and you're back to a factory bed. When folded I can still pull my 5th wheel with no interference.
My buddy has a BakFlip that he likes a lot.

I agree with MISurveyor. I also have a trifold and love it. The installation and removal are very simple.

I bought a pickup with the tri fold already on it. I ove it. Easy to latch and unlatch. Seats really well keeps water out. Surprisingly sturdy. Like it well enough that I won't own another truck without having one on it

I also use the extang solid fold and I’m very happy with it...Like the others said I can remove it in about 1 minute and with my locking tailgate my gear in the bed secure.

I got one on eBay for my tacoma for like 300. Been very happy with it. I had to install a locking tailgate handle to make everything secure.

Biggest question I have on the tri-fold is do they fold up all the way? I have seen pictures of one brand where it was laying up against the back window but can't seem to find it again.

I will have a locking tailgate. Would prefer something that can handle a little bit of snow load since it will reside in northern Wisconsin.

Bakflip will fold up all the way and you can also secure it partially folded. I just put one on my Ram and am pleased. You can open/close the tailgate with the cover down. Took about 45 mins. for no-drill install. Call them direct and get a better than advertised price.

Mine folds up to last section. I've had no issues getting to stuff in bed though. Mine is hard plastic something or other. Seals to bed rail really well. I ran it through carwsh and water never got into the bed.

I know you asked about the folding covers but I put an Undercover SE on my 2020 Silverado a couple months ago and we LOVE it! Locks, very secure. Looks good. Very sturdy to boot.

The only problem I see with some of the trifolds is when fully folded in covers the back window. But the roll-ups also have the downside of losing some bed space..

I really appreciate at the input. I hadn't really given the tri-fold much thought but they seem to be popular. It looks like some companies tri-folds fold up for full bed access and some don't. I would want full access even if it covers rear window.
Would still like to hear from anyone with a hard roll up. My dad has a nice slider but canister eats up some space and my shortbox doesn't have much space to begin with.

Take a look at Diamondback truck covers. Ship to your door. No drilling. I have the standard on my gmc diesel and it holds 400lbs on top.

I can promise you will like it or they will take it back.

I can send any pictures you need

I had a hard top ARE for 7 years. It sealed up really well, except tailgat area which is a problem for any bed cover. No worry about snow load. locks as securely as other hard top canopies. Covers tailgate so no lock needed for that. clamps or bolts to bedrooms so no adjusting or shrinkage.
It can be a pain to remove ; I slide 2 x 4s with eyebbolts under it and use a boat winch in the rafters of shop remove it.
Things in the front of the bed are harder to reach but a pole with a hook on it works well for that.
