To Non Residents Considering Wyoming Moose Preference Points

I drew my Wy tag 6 or so years ago and just dropped my wifes 20 points this year. Not paying them anymore. You can go to NFL or Alberta the same price or cheaper than you can go guided in WY

There is only one non-resident random bull tag in Wyoming in 2024.

There were only 5 preference point cow tags, they each took over 20 points to draw. So over $3000 in points and a $3000 tag.

The bull tags took on average 23 (max points) to draw. There were about 23 bull only or any moose tags. They all took max points.

I don't think anyone should be applying for a random tag unless they are in the 22-23 points range. It is too much money to tie up for 5 months.

The fact that WY still sells points to people with less than 18-20 preference points is fraud. They are taking $150 for something with clearly no value and they know it.

I just bought my 20th point for both WY moose and sheep. At 43 years old- I feel I’m pot committed and hoping maybe I will get lucky enough to draw before I’m too old to physically do it. I’ve wasted $300 annually on worse things i suppose haha

Nobody has spent $3000 on Moose points.
Max for Moose, after buying in 2024 for '25, is $2,020. Max for Sheep is $2,320

(Attached) alot of those guys had about $2500 invested in the NR WY sheep process. Another $2500 in Moose.

About $5K stolen.

Pretty disgusting how WY GFD defrauded their dedicated consumers.

It’s funny how the working group and department made reasonable proposals to address the big three point system after 90/10 and the legislature continues a fraudulent money grab. For reference, SC eliminated their turkey draw system because it had become unsustainable. They refunded all purchased preference points. There is right and there is wrong. People mistakenly trust the government to act in good faith. Selling worthless points to people assuming they are improving their draw odds is fraud. WY’s own analysis shows only those with a couple decades of points have a chance based on life expectancy. Selling preference points to others is stealing. WY needs to change the NR draw, period.

Not to single you out but to use your situation as an illustration of what people are up against. There are more variables than I address in my math below but again, it is just for illustrating a point.

With 20 sheep points you are behind 1,209 hunters with more points than you, and 313 hunters in your pool, and it is a true preference point system. There are currently 16 NR tags given out each year (no random tags). Let's be optimistic and say half of those point holders are older than you and die before they draw a tag. 1209 / 2 = 605 remaining; 605 / 16 = 38. 38 years until your point pool reaches the top. Then it is you against the 313 others in your pool. That means that in 38 years you will have a 16/313=5% chance of drawing a tag and you will have spent another $5,700 to get there. You could draw the first year or it could take 313 / 16 = 20 years longer. So anywhere between 38-58 years to ensure a tag, assuming that tag numbers don't decline.

It looks like quite a few tags were drawn with 24 pts, so it might feel like you're getting close but in reality you have to understand that there are only 67 point holders higher than that and for the most part they didn't apply. There are still going to be 233 guys who had 24 pts that will have 25 pts going into the 2025 drawing. Meaning that you won't see anybody draw a tag with fewer than 25 points next year.

So...keep on keepin' on, I guess.

P.S. For what it's worth according to an internet interest calculator, if you invest $150 annually at 7% rate of return you will have $26,800 in 38 years.
