Interesting Ruger Hawkeye Hunter in 358 Winchester

Explain to me how using the same case as a 308 (7.62X51) used as a sniper caliber for years by the US military, all of a sudden that case with a 358 diameter bullet can't go past 200 yards and might bounce off an animal at 500 or 600 yards??? BG

The 358 Winchester is vastly underrated!

It's no long range cartridge though.. it probably is the best cartridge from zero to 250 yards inside the woods!

The writers wrote this cartridge off a long time ago! The brush busting 358! Great for short range woods hunting.. they wrote!

At any rate.. it's a reloaders cartridge!

I love mine ❤️

Believe it or not, guns launch bullets, not cases. Using a heavier, larger diameter bullet in the same case will mean slower initial velocity, greater surface area to catch wind, and greater velocity loss at range due to lower B.C.

So yes, ignoring your obvious hyperbole, .358win does not magically maintain the same exact long range performance as .308 while also delivering a heavier payload. You can't get something for nothing.

Someone said something about dragging a suppressor around in the woods. I have an AB Raptor with a 3" reflex and it isn't dragging anything with a 16" barrel. It is Ti and made for .375. Works well but of course the most quiet with subsonics. It is another world in suppressors. Be Well Brothers, BG.
