Ticks are BaD - need tick clothing.

Why do you dilute it so much? Why not go stronger ?
or why not just spray the hell out of them with sawyer's ? until they are dripping wet.

and why spin in the washer? why not hang dry ?
The MSDS is very long, here’s a more succinct version. 0.5% is the recommended dilution for safe but effective use.

You can spray the hell out of your clothes with Saywers version but it’s more expensive than mixing your own. $12 for 8oz of Martin’s makes 160oz (over a gallon) diluted vs $20 for 24oz of Sawyers.

I just think soaking impregnates the fabric more effectively. Spin cycle in the washer to get most of the water weight out before hang drying. Don’t want the merino tops to stretch under their own weight. Or the weight to rip my shower curtain rod off the wall.

Safe dilution.

I mostly hang dry. I'll set up a long clothes rod in the garage, spray JUST to drip and let air dry. Any more than that just to drip is wasted money and less is not as effective.

Been over a decade without a tick in some heavily infested woods, so it works.

I wear DEET and do the permethrin thing. I have had African tick fever and Lyme disease. Do it or wish you did.

I treat my clothes like everyone else suggests here (spray) and soak my gaiters (tight fitting lighter ones), haven't had a tick in years. That's with spending most of May and June in the mountains in real ticky areas. I also spray my boots and pack.

I of course do the permethrin like everyone else. My hunting clothes and my farming clothes. Then I let them air dry outside but not in direct sunlight. Sunlight inactivates wet permethrin.

If I’m in the thick stuff I will also use picaridin lotion on exposed skin. With that combo I haven’t had a tick in years and I’m in chest high grass all the time.

There are companies you can send clothes to that say they can bond permethrin to clothes and will last like 60 washes. I actually bought a pouch to send clothes in but have never sent. It’s just so easy to buy concentrate and do once a year myself.

Permethrin concentration in Sawyers is 0.5%. The DIY recipes mentioned in this thread (10% diluted at 19:1 ratio or 36.8% diluted at 64:1 ratio) will result in the same 0.5% permethrin concentration. Based on observed effectiveness of my homemade 0.5% mixture, I see no reason to mix it any stronger.

Cost savings is the reason to make your own. Sawyers costs around $0.65/oz. Buying concentrated permethrin and diluting it down to 0.5% brings the cost under $0.05/oz. If you’re treating a lot of clothing and/or spraying your lawn (I do both), the cost savings is significant.

I've held off using permethrin but like OP stated, ticks are REALLY bad this year in New England (I'm in CT)...might be time for me to check it out too.

Hunted Turkey in Maine. Ticks are beyond bad this season. I picked up the Sitka Guard pants, but no back pockets, so I sent them back. How stupid !!!

Any other good tick clothing by Kuiu or another brand ?
I want insect clothing in addition to spraying my stuff down with Sawyers...
Tick clothing(insectsheild, etc). already has permethrin in it.

You can go to tractor supply or internet and order a a stronger undiluted permethrin. You can dilute to your choosing

I recently started using permethrin and have also had good luck with it. I historically end up with dozens of tick bites per year here in Illinois.

They say 70 washings. I doubt I have ever washed a piece of outdoor clothing 70 times before replacing it. But re-treating would be cheaper than replacing anyway.
It’s not permanent. Google half life of permethrin. It may last as a chemical for 70 days but the effectiveness degrades significantly quickly especially with UV. Thus why we are recommending repeat spray on applications.

What he is talking about is a form bonded to clothing that supposedly last much longer than just what you spray on it.

Does it work? Who knows. That’s why I just buy concentrate and do myself once a season.

I’m very aware exactly what he is talking about, thus why I’m explaining the marketing behind it. Simms, Columbia, Sitka etc have been using permethrin for years. The bonding “technology”/mix still doesnt stop the half life.

You want max protection retreat your “insect shield/blocker/etc” before use as initial treatment is degrading every time it’s washed and in the sun.

You want max protection… don’t use sawyers use a higher %

Ok

Sawyers is the only thing that I've found that works here in the south. So many people getting alpha-gal now and it's really starting to get me worried.

We don't have many deer ticks and don't have any seed ticks in this part of Iowa. However, the run of the mill "wood ticks" have been awful on the acreage this year. Woke up in the middle of the night 3 times so far with one crawling on me under the covers. Nasty little buggers! Pretty certain they drop or brush off the dogs and then find humans easier to navigate.

They need to invent a tick pill people can take like they have for dogs.
