Just got my Tikka 243 back from the smith... I had it cut to 17" and he threaded it 5/8-24, but the shoulder is .675

I told him I didn't know what the barrel diameter would be at 17 so if there's not enough shoulder, thread it 1/2-28. Something got lost in translation.

This is only .05 over the thread major. Not much of a shoulder.

Any remedy other than chopping another 1/2 inch and rethreading 1/2-28?

I'm guessing the relief cut at the shoulder would preclude you from extending the 5/8-24 threads to add on a shoulder but maybe someone with more machining experience can confirm that.

You're probably stuck chopping it again.

I would want my suppressor in hand to check how it shoulders

I know I would prefer to have 1/2-28 over a 0.050" shoulder
ETA id still be tempted to try it with 0.050" shoulder vs spending another $100 to re thread

The whole thread shoulder thing with suppressors doesn’t seem to have a lot of data supporting it. Spin the suppressor on until it stops, pull the bolt and look down the bore. If suppressor looks straight, shoot it. If you have problems, then consider taking it back to a smith. If not, shoot more and be happy.

I saw Form's post saying the same thing. He said "does it stop?"... Mine "yielded" but I could definitely keep going if I wanted. That was the deciding factor for me.

Just ran over to the smith. He thought we could recut to 1/2 28 without lopping of another half inch. We'll see.
