Those looking to upgrade CVA sights

I just wanted to expand upon and combine a few articles for those of us that want to upgrade the sights on the CVA and in my case specifically an Accura V2. The article from Go Hunt (https://www.gohunt.com/read/skills/increased-accuracy-from-an-open-sight-muzzleloader#gs.4c0kxg) outlines how to add a fine crosshair with a globe on the front but the Accuras suffer from lack of adjustment in the rear to sight in at 100 yards. The lack of rear adjustment was fixed after I found the article on Rokslide (https://www.rokslide.com/extended-range-muzzleloader-part-ii/) on how to build an extended range muzzleloader and mentioned weaver mount peeps. I ordered the low and tall XS Ghost Ring weaver backup sights to test, added a weaver back to my Accura, and found the low was far too low and the talls were just right. I haven't had extensive time to test but it also significantly lengthens the distance between the rear peep and front sight while also putting the peep just in front of the breach plug. Should be using it on a few hunts this year so I will report back with some thoughts as I spend more time with it.

Thanks for the Cooper ML posts being pinned as well. I really like the NECG peep that was installed and if this XS doesn't work out I will throw one of those on to give it a test. Went out today to poke some holes in targets but ended up getting rained out.

I ended up doing the globe on my Accura V2 per the Go Hunt article and found out the hard way there wasn’t enough height in the rear sight. After a few humble attempts at building a spacer out of some 1” GRC conduit, I gave this EABCO sight a shot and found that it had plenty of adjustment to allow me to use the globe:

It worked on my Accura V2- I used the .100” ramp with the .404 globe. The Williams WGRS sight from that article didn’t give me the elevation required.

Good to know. That was on my list to try but I wasn't sure that it was any taller than the ramp I had. What yardage are you sighting in at and how much adjustment do you have yet in the slide?

I haven’t tested out how much elevation I have, as for hunting purposes I zero at 100 and know that i can expect about 4.5” of drop at 200.

Was at the range this morning again and that sight combination is a no-go. It was a foot high at 100 with no room to drop. They do sell taller front globes but I am going to order a NECG peep and the rib peep next. I thought this one was good to go based on measurements but I was way off.

I’ve tried 2 marble arms .100 front ramps so far and both allow the globe to slide more than halfway though. I guess there’s a way to modify to fit, but I’d rather not bang on stuff.

Anyone else experience this? Or is the globe off spec?

Take a rag and a vice grips and slowly tighten on the lips of the ramp to close that gap and wrap the rag around the ramp to keep it from getting marred. I will try to come up with an illustration to make that more clear but it is easy. The key is to go slow and don't crank down on the vice grips right away. Pinch, check globe clearance, tighten, pinch, check repeat.

Also wanted to add that the XS sights are a high quality piece for anyone looking at them for any other projects. The only thing I wish they had were some sort of reference marks for sight adjustment.

ColoradoBackpackHunter what brand of weaver base did you install on your set up that you were shooting a foot high? Im piecing together the same set up for a CVA Plains Rifle

The weaver base was from weaver and was the two piece 418M. They are as low as they come. The .225" dovetail from Marble may work with this rear sight combo but I haven't been able to find it in stock anywhere.

Add a layer or layers of aluminum foil, pop can, (any shim stock) under the dovetail to force it to bite harder. Once you have the right thickness drive it home and trim with an exacto.

I had the same issue with my front ramp when installing a Lyman globe sight. I fixed it the issue similar to how CObackpackhunter described. However instead of using vice grips I put a towel over the ramp and tapped it with a small ball peen hammer. It worked perfectly, didn't take much effort, and didn't mar the front ramp.

I also have the EABCO peep rib that was linked above. Unfortunately I haven't been able to get out and try the setup due to our weather not lining up with my days off. I'm hoping this setup will work and will post back as soon as I get out to try it.

Do you think the low XS back up weaver sight would work better than the high?

No, I had both and there is a zone of adjustment that cant be had between the two of them that seems to be the sweet spot.

Ok after running the numbers and figuring out how much correction would be required on the front sight to bring the zero down to 100yds I will share what I did. I ordered the Williams shorty 1/8" ramp and the .494 Globe front sight combined with the #418 weaver base and tall XS weaver sight should allow for 100yd zero with room for adjustment up and down if desired.
