The Shoot2hunt Podcast

I'm only 30 but have had some health issues the past few months that have restricted my diet and limited my exercise and I feel like shit from it
Damn thats tough man. Hopefully it gets better soon

What’s wild to me, when I hit 40 and everyone on the periphery outside of my family and friends, would start to tell me how I was going to feel. When I tell them I feel better at 40 than I did at 30 they’ll always insist the wheels are about to fall off- they NEVER ask how I feel better a decade closer to the grave.

I get this all the time. I am 41 and in so much better shape and generally feel better than any other point in my life. I did a half Iron man at 39 and could not have dreamed of doing that any time in my early 30s or 20s.

Its not without some thought, what I eat, how and when I work out, how I sleep etc is all important. But its totally doable to feel amazing in your 40s.

What sucks is all my friends are out of shape so what we can do together is becoming more and more limited. None of them are hiking up a mountain, carrying a canoe on a long portage, or doing anything physical. Most struggle to come along following my setter around the grouse woods for a few hours. Its gotten to where I do nearly everything solo as I keep getting more fit and my friends age out of just about everything.

Need to find some new local hunting and adventure buddies.

Yeah, I'm really hoping to have it resolved soon. I was probably exaggerating a bit about how bad it is but it is amazing how much not getting regular exercise affects the way everything feels.

Feels akin to having a baby and all the parents with older kids just want to say stuff about "wait till the sleep regression," or "wait till the terrible twos," or "yeah but wait till they're teens."

I dont eat any sugar as part of my regular diet. Well a few weeks ago I had a craving for some sweets, so my wife made me some brownies and I ate 2 or 3 of them that night. I woke up the next morning feeling like I had the flu, or a hang over. Nauseous, headache, it was insane.

and all this...^^^

10 years yesterday I quit alcohol.

The less sugar I eat, the more inflammation is apparent when I do fall off the wagon.

seriously! 2 or 3 Hershey kisses will wreck me for 2 days!

state of mind...

stay active...

I struggle with looking at a big mountain and thinking "this is gonna suck!"
if I just start hiking, pretty soon I'm there and it wasn't as bad as my smooth brain was trying to make me think.

That’s the worst sort of projection from weak parents
“I struggle with this millennia old biological imperative, you will too”
Then when you hit those milestones and there’s no Armageddon they look at you like some sort of outlier.
Probably not a coincidence they always seem to have the shittiest kids or the IPad kids

Whenever my brain stops saying “I wonder what’s over that next ridge” it’s probably time to switch back to waterfowl

TLDR: Training, diet, sleep, hot/cold and finally Drugs

I was
-Overtraining 6-10~ hard workouts a week
Now I have 1-2 hard 1-2 moderate and 2x week yoga with my wife. Still ruck 2-3 times a week but only 35# +3L water
- I had a great diet but was under eating in general and too few carbohydrates. I feel orders of magnitude better with A few fruits and sweet potatoes, they’ve made such a huge difference in recovery

-sleep: I chronically underslept and probably averaged 4.5 hours/ night for years. Now I am much closer to 7 and did sleep hygiene on my bedroom. No lights, near total blackout, the only electronics is an alarm clock. Our phones live in the kitchen.

- DRUGS; I had low but “clinically acceptable” testosterone from age 25- I’d bounce between 300 and 400 so now I take a little T 2x a week and it’s been a major reset
It even “cured” the aches and pains I had in my hands and knees despite being a few Lbs heavier.

*I dipped for about 20 years and quit cold turkey after a mouth cancer scare. I was off nicotine for a few years and started back again once Zyn became more mainstream it’s definitely improving focus and clarity.

-HOT AND COLD EXPOSURE: daily cold plunge or minimum cold shower on waking,Sauna 2-3x week after workout 1 of the aforementioned Yogas is “hot”

One major hurdle was my labs never pointed at anything clinically wrong. Everything was subjective and in my echo chamber I was doing pretty good compared to some of my friends. No physician ever recommended any changes, probably because they couldn’t bill insurance for it.

I need to start taking cold showers. But there's absolutely nothing like bathing naked in an icy mountain river when camping. That's refreshing beyond belief and I can understand why the blackfeet were religious with it

I live by this, inspired by my wife. That mentality is poison. Whater your self talk is will become reality. Im telling myself I'm getting younger every year.
