Thread 'Scope mounting to maintain zero'

After multiple requests for an explanation of how to mount a scope in order to have the lowest possibility of loss of zero, a discussion of a scope mounting video, and the latest thread about scope bases and action screw coming loose, I took some pics of what I do with a rifle when I get it and how I mount scopes (or anything with screws).

To start- a bit of background of why I say what I say.

I am a backpack hunter. What I write below is tailored to hunting.

Having sid that, I work at a place that fires a lot of ammo. I see over half a million rounds a year on average get fired...

Wish I had seen this a week and a half sooner. 2 weeks ago our new Rokslide 95 "twins" arrived (Ruger American Gen 2 Predator 6mm ARC), 1 for Kathy (my wife) and 1 for myself. I took my time mounting scopes, trying to do it the best I could. Using Acetone, I degreased the action, the picatinny rail, the rings, and all the screws. Mounted the rail back to the action using purple thread locker on the screws, torqued them down in 2 steps with a Wheeler FAT Wrench. The instructions that came with the scope and rings said not to use thread locker on those screws. The rings to rail screws had what looked like blue thread locker on them, so I torqued them to the specified torque, again in 2 steps, with the FAT Wrench. Lined up the scope rings the way a gunshop owner told me to do years ago, keeping the rings centered as much as possible between the turrets and the objective and ocular bells. Again, torqued the rings in 2 steps, with the FAT Wrench. Kept the gaps as even as I could tell. This is the mounting for my scope, the wife's is mounted 1 notch further to the rear of rail with the ring locations pretty much identical on the scope. Now I learn that I would have been better to have spaced them wider if possible. I got my rifle out of the safe tonight, I don't think there's quite enough space to move the rear ring back but I think I could have moved the front ring forward a notch.



Seems I'm learning this a little late. Most of the scopes I've mounted have been on 2 piece bases that never left much of any option on ring spacing, only have a few rifles with picatinny rails.

Not all rifles are set up for backcountry hard use mountain hunting, and not everyone limits their choices to only "drop test approved" scopes.

There's obviously no downside if you do, but my personal favorite scope (Athlon Helos gen2 2-12x) isn't drop test approved and several have served me well.

Same for the Arken LH4 4-16x scopes. I have three and all track like they're on rails. Perfect for a 22lr or something like my 5.56 Ranch "trainer."

I've been looking at that Athlon for a psuedo MK12 Mod H build I'm doing. How do you like that reticle, especially in the low end of the range?

I like it. The illumination makes it good on 4x, without it it's still good in decent light.

I'm still in awe of scopes (I have 3) I paid $219 for at CameralandNY tracking perfectly.

FWIW, I much prefer the Athlon Helos gen2 2-12x for AR "MPVO" use or hunting. It's almost twice as much though.

The Arken LH4 is freaking amazing on a 22lr, and I kinda wish I had an SH4 4-16 with exposed elevation turrets on my "95" though.

The Helos getting time on the clock out to 600:

Thanks for the feedback. I might go ahead and pull the trigger on the Athlon since GovX has a pretty good deal on it right now. Worse case it's a decent extra scope to have on hand.

That's how I ended up with a "RS 95"

Ranch 5.56 with approx 3k rds on it. Epoxied the front end, added an arca rail i had, cheap bipod, jb bore pasted the bolt, some other small mods. Only shot a few coyotes with it but it mainly gets used for target shooting inside of 300yds.

Thanks for the feedback. I might go ahead and pull the trigger on the Athlon since GovX has a pretty good deal on it right now. Worse case it's a decent extra scope to have on hand.

None that weren't mag related. I bought some asc mags to be able to load longer coal and 1 of the 3 doesn't feed very well. But the other 2 are great and so has all the polymer ar mags ive tried.

Was the AICS style mag that didn’t feed well poly?

They weren't aics style mags. They are metal ASC mags.

What COAL can you load to with them? I'm waiting on "flush fit" Duramags to be back in stock for 5.56.

I wanna say it was around 2.34 or something. Ended up not being worth it. Everything i loaded shot about the same as most box ammo, including 55 gr ball. I could get it down to 1ish inch groups for 5-10 rds but box ammo shot similar for less cost and less hassle.

That's good to know. AAC 77g OTM has shot well for me, and I have 77g TMK bullets to load. LOTS of them.

If magazine length gives similar accuracy I'm not going to chase my tail too much.
