Top one is pretty close.

Stainless t3x
18” ACE tikka lite contour 7.5 twist, 223 wylde
Rokstok
Sportsmatch medium (or high? Not the lower ones) rings
Maven rs1.2
High desert bottom metal
Waters 10 rd mag for range, @pods8 (Rugged Stitching) printed 4 rd mag for hunting
Pictured with tbac ultra 7

If doing over and absolutely optimizing I’d consider 21-22” with a OG6, 0.100” freebore instead of wylde, and 7 twist. I’ll also likely go pic rail and something like NF UL rings going forward instead of direct mount rings.

Curious about barrel length. Why go longer? Never owned a bolt action .223 and have a TX3 on order with a 20” barrel and was thinking it may be too long. Going to run a otb can on it.

For me, this is close. It’s by far my favorite rifle to shoot, and not just as a “training rifle”. It’s kinda become a great general purpose all-arounder.
I’ve made the factory stock work for me but it does have its shortcomings and because I love the gun so much it has a wood RS Lite in the works. Eventually it’ll get the OG223 can and this one will move to the 6cm.

Not too long, just depends on what you want and other limitations. Extra velocity is nice over the 16”.

If you look at the picture I posted, the other rifle is an 18” 6 creed with an og65. Way shorter than the 18” 223 with an ultra 7.

18” makes sense if you’re adding 7” of suppressor to it. Shorter is certainly nice for being handy but purely shooting I like the balance and stability of a longer barrel.

Longer also means more velocity and less noise. I don’t like loading ammo to Internet forum pressures. Modest is mo better.

The quickload/GRT dweebs will probably tell you it’s easier to get a complete powder burn too but that’s not something I worry about.

It’s crazy to think just a few year ago I was shooting a 20” gun with an 8 inch suppressor and was okay with it. Now any gun with a barrel over 18” regardless of the suppressor length feels too long. Around 22-23” length with a suppressor feels about right.

Ha Ha! I had a 24” barrel with a 7.5” can. Felt like I was carrying a Pole Vault in the woods. That’s why I was questioning if I should chop my 20”.223 barrel. I think with a OTB can it will be ok. We will see.

26” barrel plus Ultra 7, made it long…

Have you shot groups with identical rifles setup optimally, with the only difference being barrel length?
From what I/we have seen and measured, the groups get better from all rested and non supported positions with shorter barrels (16”) versus 20” on the exact the same rifles. In some cases dramatically so with S2H students. I personally don’t have much interest in anything 20” and longer for the vast majority of uses after “testing” and seeing the difference.

I haven’t. I might be biased too much by barricade benchrest type shooting.

Yeah. In that case- in all cases I guess it’s about balance. But the forward balance of a heavy PRS type rifle allows one to free recoil it/just let the rifle hold itself on the bag- I haven’t been able to do that with 8lb rifles.

I’d be interested in hearing more about this. When you say non-supported, is that free hand or are you saying any and all Appleseed type positions as long as there isn’t an additional rest like a pack/pole/terrain?

@wind gypsy

I wasn’t in argument with what you wrote- I am genuinely curious. The heavy use with sub 18” barrels in hunting weight rifles for me is mostly in the last year, and the results weren’t what I expected on the surface- though if I think about it, it makes sense. It’s even made me want slightly heavier barrels (than a T3 lite) in 16”.

Whats the benefit of going to the other og vs the og65.
Will there be enough difference?
Didn’t catch they were doing one for 223.
