I've been successful in the past but I was never the one calling or calling the shots. This year I'm striking out on my own and will be needing to learn "How to and when to call" so I was wondering if Elknuts playbook is worth it? Or just order some calls and watch the videos and practice a ton in the next 8 months.

Thanks Shawn

If he is not interested in taking your copy I have always wanted to give it a read. I have spent some time on his forum and for the most part I enjoy what he has contributed. I am curios about the book how it will relate to my 25 years of experience hunting elk. I am sure there is something I can learn from it... I haven't found a video or a book yet that I didn't learn something from.

Shawn, it's a very good Book. There are over a hundred years of experience in the PlayBook combined with the 5 of us in the ElkNut Crew. The book shares methods & techniques we've used over the years & to present day in elk hunting OTC Public Lands. These techniques have served us well in wolf country & non wolf country. This Book thinks way outside the box & also helps ones to look into many ways to take elk not just calling them! 100's of bulls have been taken by hunters like yourself that attribute the PlayBook in aiding in their success, it's a very good Book for putting elk on the ground! Calling to elk for location is a large part in finding elk, that's the easy part, knowing what to do with them after locating them is the difficult part in many OTC areas!

If you're looking for some really hard hitting elk info to up your game & leave no stone un-turned consider this PKG here! http://stores.elknut.com/elk-hunting-tactics-for-wolf-country-pkg-00/

It will help you out a ton. Feel free to ask any questions you may have about this? Thanks!

I read the playbook, and I can only say it's usefulness depends on the area and the situation. I've been bowhunting elk just about every year since 1993, mostly in CO and I know for a fact some of those aggressive techniques will not work on pressured elk (that book has cost me more than 1 bull). Too many guys go running and gunning and blow elk out of the area. I wish they had done a better job with when to go aggressive, because it's not the miracle they say it is (but they are selling books). If you live out west and have all the time to scout and multiple areas to hunt great, but for most NRs we only get 1 week and 1 area to hunt, best to back off if it's not ideal and have a very good chance of hunting them another day, rather than blow them out of the area for the rest of your trip and there's no plan B.

Mat, thanks for your response! As we all know there are no guarantees in elk hunting whether you're calling, ambushing or spot & stalk. It still requires skill on all our parts to use the right method per encounter & then a bit of luck can still be required & appreciated! (grin) The info in the PlayBook & other material we offer has been proven successful 100's of times over on heavily hunted OTC Public Land elk hunts for many years now. We ourselves in the 5 man crew hunt strictly DIY OTC hunts. We have over a 95% success ratio in 27 years on these hunts. The info in the PlayBook is what we share & use ourselves in many states. Idaho which is full of wolves to combat & not just hunters proves to be a tough state yet we still show consistent success. You can too!

When considering a specific method we have to "Read The Situation" this allows us to apply the best odds to get bulls into bowrange. You need to do the same.

For instance, just because you come across a bull with cows does not mean you can be aggressive or wreckless with him, what counts most is does this bull have at least one hot cow in the group? If not you do not get aggressive with him, you must play more on his curiosity than his manhood! I feel this may be one area you are misunderstanding? If not please share here with us what you have issue with & I'll do my best to help you out! It's all about Reading The Situation or what's going on for the time phase of the rut during your hunt! Let's iron this out! We have elk to kill! (grin) All our info is extremely deadly on any elk! Thanks!

My brotherand has the book and we have dug it out of his pack a few times trying to figure out what we may have done wrong or what we should be doing in the situation we are in.

I just picked the book up last year and found the book extremely interesting and useful. Would re-read it every night in camp. I can't say I've been successful with the techniques yet but it was my first year of really trying to speak elk and still mostly pre-rut. The book certainly helps shorten the learning curve and everything you can learn is worth it. It's a small price when you consider the cost of the hunt and short amount of time you get to hunt. I learned how I messed thing up in previous years. I think it's especially important I learn and practice all I can since, like many NR, we only get a short window to hunt out west and can't spend every weekend in elk country studying them and learning.

Elknut -

I appreciate your enthusiasm and I'm not trying to discredit your success, but when your tactics go wrong they go very wrong for the out of town hunter with limited time and areas to hunt. I learned the hard way the worst thing you can do if you find elk that no one else knows about is to pressure them too hard (unless it's the last day). This is why I and a lot of other long time elk hunters pretty much gave up calling elk in CO. I like to think I've made every mistake (many more than once) so I know what not to do. There are too many guys that watch shows and read books and think some of these simple tips are the only way to go. What they end up doing is messing up the same elk I'm trying to hunt, especially later in the season. If you hit the 1-2 day very peak of the rut you can't go wrong, but 95% of other times you can, and many do.

All I'm saying is aggressive elk calling works great for you local guys who know the area and the animals, but for a majority that only see elk for maybe 1 week a year it *may* make the hunting harder. I only wish you would temper down the enthusiasm a bit that your aggressive tactics work most every time and everywhere for everyone and mention it might be better to back off and keep them around for another day. Most whitetail hunters have no idea when you bust a herd they can move 5+ miles and never return, that's why anyone hunting later in the archery season in CO will find so much 2 week old sign. Those elk were cleared out by hunters bumping them. FWIW I still use your CD as it's a good guide to the types of elk calls.
