The 6UM

Alright. I'm still trying to nail down an action length for building a 6um-40. Defiance Anti X or Ti X action.

What is the appropriate length? Short or medium?

Seems like you guys are seating the bullets well shorter than where they touch the lands.

Sounds like it touches the lands at around 2.970" COAL, but that is unrealistic because the bullet wouldn't be embedded into the case neck?

What is the longest expected COAL?

I want to be absolutely certain that I don't have issues with the bullet tips being smashed in the magazine under recoil, like I have with two other rifles.

Thank you!

I've seated DTACS anywhere from .020"-.120" off. They do not care one bit. Just seat them in the general neighborhood of .060" off and call it good. The bullet would still be in the neck at 2.970. I've never seated mine longer than 2.950, even with the new heavy TMK.
The best way to avoid smashed bullet tips is properly designed magazines with shoulder stops. I've only had the 6 UM in Tikka actions, so I'm not much help there.

Would anybody happen to have a piece of once fired 6um-40 brass and 2 or 3 115 dtacs that they wouldn't mind parting with? I'm willing to pay for shipping, etc.

Gunsmith wants to make a dummy round for smithing and brass is currently sold out. Hopefully I can find dies!

Thanks!

6um-30 is available on UMs website and dies are able to be backordered. I'd call them and ask if they can help you out with a piece of fired brass and get your dies and brass ordered.

Anyone have experience with the UM and elk shoulders. Buddy is interested in the UM but is concerned about shoulders. He's not in here. Told him it's a non issue. But everyone likes pics.

Is he worried about the high velocity vs other 6mm? Or just 6mm in general against an elk shoulder? If it’s just a 6mm concern, lots of great evidence in the 6mm kill thread.

Here’s a 103ELDX vs a bull elk shoulder that was going around 2700FPS IIRC. No issue at all, it was devastating.

At this point we know that almost any center-fire vs the dreaded elk shoulder is a non-issue. If the hundreds of examples shown in the 6mm and 223 threads isn't enough, he's just a horse that won't drink water.

The 6um is far from the low end of "wallup".

This is an elk shoulder exit wound from a quartering away shot. 115 Dtac from 6-7PRC 474 yards. Elk ran 25 yards spewing blood. About 10 % of the meat from that shoulder was usable.. so I would say the 6mm is too much for elk shoulders! Should wait for a perfect broadside shot. This was my 12 year old son's first elk, so he took the shot he had.
