The 6UM

The reticle jump and ability to spot shots with the 6UM and 110+ grain bullets is about like a very hot loaded 6.5cm with 147gr or 156gr bullets. Definitely less jump than the 6.5prc. Yes the calculator puts it closer to a 6.5prc than 6.5cm, however recoil velocity plays a part in spotting impacts.
The feeling that most get is that 6UM recoils faster, but with less if a heavy “push”. The 6.5cm recoils “less”, but with a hot loaded heavy bullet- “pushes” more. My actual ability to soot my own shots with identical rifles is about same/same between the 6UM and heavy 6.5cm loads.

Very well stated. A man with better words than “snappier” helps. My 6.5cm remark was a overzealous mischaracterization, made while quickly replying at work. More likely a preference to the manners than anything.

I've read through about 10 pages of this so far. What can is working best for the 6 um? Is it hearing safe with shorter barrel lengths? How loud? Thanks!

No, it’s not a large difference. Then again, going to a 140 or 147gr 6.5mm is just a couple ft-lbs more as well…. And you are right back where you started.

I've read through 11 pages so far and am contemplating doing a lighter caliber, shorter barrel suppressed rifle for elk.

Could you explain why you're trying to minimize recoil so much (less than a 6.5 creedmoor)? Assuming the animal moves a bit for a follow up shot and the gun moves off target when you cycle the bolt...

Is the idea to watch the trace of the first shot? ... Trying to understand.

Seeing the bullet impact and the animals reaction through recoil is one of the greatest contributors to drama free killing.

Was just about to post a question asking about the guys with less than ideal form, how does the recoil compare to a 6.5cm. Thanks for the info!

Alright, no math on my end, but I did video the recoil of each off a tripod today for reference. It seems like it shows the recoil best. In both videos I shot the first shot just letting the gun recoil and the second shot putting some shoulder into it and down pressure on the fore end. Both rifles are very easy to shoot. Take it for what you will.
I recently put the 6.5cm in a new chassis (mdt lss xl gen2) so it’s #11 now sending a 144 @2718
6um 40 in the manners pro hunter right at 8.5# with a 115 dtac @3225

Controlling muzzle jump is the key to spotting hits. The 6UM paired with a Rokstok is the key to a sub-10 # suppressed rifle setup. A few weeks back, I shot a deer with a 7PRC. I felt helpless not being able to spot my own hits, and my rookie spotter was telling me I was shooting over, but in reality, I was shooting through the deer. As Form stated, drama-free killing starts with spotting your shots!

Cheapest route would be a tikka 6.5 prc and a prefit barrel. Going that route you should come in around 2k with dies and brass. You can spend as much as you want.
