The 6UM

Alot slower than i was expecting. 66.2 N570. 18" barrel
115’s? If so Mine is about the same. I was getting 3023 with 66 this past week. I was disappointed initially but it is still a 1000 yard gun at that speed. Ace barrel?

If you're burning 58 grains of powder in a 6mm bore and you want to get some mileage out of the barrel, heat does matter at least a little. I'm not saying to be one of those "only the first shot matters so I let my barrels cool between shots" jokers but I wouldn't go full on nuclear on a highly overbore hunting barrel if I cared about it lasting a while.

How many people are truly burning out their barrels?? 6UM, 300 RUM, etc.. all have max barrel life of roughly 800-1000k rounds before groups are opening up beyond 1.25".. Lets do the math on how long a barrel will last

0-200 rounds is sight in, break in, and load development. so that leaves 600-800 rounds for hunting. Lets be overly assumptive and assume people are taking 2 rounds per animal. Thats 300-400 animals. We could make another assumption that people are shooting on average 5 animals per year(this is hunting website, not ELR). In theory, that barrel will be lasting 60 years. There are a few people who will light off 15-20 animals/year. But maybe lets assume everyone everyone is shooting 1 box of these ultra mag type rounds/per year... Thats 15 years.

That said... Should we really care about burning out a barrel?

My point was simply that with something so overbore, i'd at least give some consideration to how hot the barrel is during fireforming if a guy wants it to make it 800 rounds. Like dont shoot 50 rounds through it with zero cooling time. I'm pretty sure there's a guy earlier in this thread who killed his barrel during fireforming..

Here is what I got with 66 N570, 18 inch ace (.236 bore) tikka action, 115 dtac. Fire formed a batch then loaded 12 for a pressure test.. Second lot of brass seems super soft, crunching about 1 in every 8-10...

How many people only shoot animals after finding a load and don’t tinker or practice anymore? I shoot hundreds and hundreds of rounds through my hunting rifles every year. I also think 800-1000 rounds before the barrel of a 6UM is burned out is very generous. People have burned them up in 400. Id guess 600-700 is probably more realistic. 800 if you’re lucky. Maybe I’m wrong though….
