The 6UM

I’ve often thought about this. Is there no merit to shooters practicing annually after the initial site-in?

Not as their primary trainer of course, but just pre-season etc. Say 100 rnds annually for that? (Spitball number)

Depends on how many other rifles they have and how similar they are to each other.

My two Tikkas (6.5 Cm and .223) will be very close in weight and length. They have the same scope and will have the same stock.

My yearly ammo plan/budget is something like 10k .22LR, 5k .223, and 1000 6mm-8mm center fire. I have four rifles I plan to use this hunting season and a few others in the back of the safe. If I had a magnum, I’d plan to shoot it about 100 times a year.

I heavily assume anyone shooting a 6UM has more than 1 rifle. Mostly because it's still a wildcat. Nobody picks their first rifle and shoots a wildcat . I shoot several non magnum caliber when I practice. I only shoot my magnum when im shooting an animal. has nothing to do with flinching and everything to do with cost to shoot. I'm not poor, its just economics. For every 7 prc i send downrange, I could have dropped 5-223's. The prc has great ammo data and a high end scope. Its repeatable. I have no reason to believe the prc won't operate any differently since I last shot it. 100rds down range in pre season actually has a greater chance of messing with the gun than the 10 hunting rounds per year

6UM, 115 NR DTAC, 3180 MV, 730 yard bang flop.

It’s so nice to be able to watch the entire shot/impact through the scope and still have the performance to take longer shots or have the extra wind resistance.

What BC have you been using for the NR DTACS? Great bull!

How many people are truly burning out their barrels?? 6UM, 300 RUM, etc.. all have max barrel life of roughly 800-1000k rounds before groups are opening up beyond 1.25".. Lets do the math on how long a barrel will last

0-200 rounds is sight in, break in, and load development. so that leaves 600-800 rounds for hunting. Lets be overly assumptive and assume people are taking 2 rounds per animal. Thats 300-400 animals. We could make another assumption that people are shooting on average 5 animals per year(this is hunting website, not ELR). In theory, that barrel will be lasting 60 years. There are a few people who will light off 15-20 animals/year. But maybe lets assume everyone everyone is shooting 1 box of these ultra mag type rounds/per year... Thats 15 years.

That said... Should we really care about burning out a barrel?

Not sure how many rounds I put thru my 3rd 7STW barrel but probably less than 1,000. I burned enough of the throat away that a Berger 195 won't seat in the case neck and touch the lands. (after switching to 195's in barrel 4, I went back to see if I could salvage the barrel)

Barrel number 4 was measured when I moved to 195's/N570 and in a few hundred more shots had burned out an addl .120". At that point, I moved the 195's out to sit .020 off the lands which also moved the bullet boattail jct above the shoulder/neck jct. Burning that addl throat turned the rifle into a shooter instead of just being OK. The problem now is, I don't have enough throat left to do much range work.
