I'm thinking a 1:7.5 finished at 16". Gun will be hunted from sea level up to 4,000 ft. Seems reasonable?

I'm having I difficult time picking a contour though. Want to make sure there is enough meat to thread and mount a surpressor. Looking at McGowan 2 or 3. Prefer the 2 if the muzzle diameter is large enough to thread for surpressor.

Have them do a swell at the end, get a 2 or whatever size you want and they can widen the muzzle for that reason

I have a 7.5 twist very close to 3b contour coming will probably do 18" fluted possibly.

Just watching to see how everything shakes out like the +p not being worthwhile so far.

Copy. I'll see what they will charge for that. Hopefully not a "custom contour" charge.

I did order a 2b from bartlein for a different rifle years ago. I made sure it would be .710" at the muzzle if finished at 17". Maybe I'll check with McGowan on the 2b muzzle diameter at 16".

If I wanted to rebarrel my factory tikka 300wsm to a 6um, is it as simple as a barrel swap? Or will bolt/mags/bolt stop need to be changed?

General question - At what distance does a 6UM make more sense than a 6CM or even 6.5CM? Guessing it's out past 6-800 yards?

Or are those of you guys that are going to a 6UM just looking for better trajectory/wind regardless of yardage? Or other...?

Well, I feel personally attacked by your questions. I hope to someday have the self control and sensibility to just own a 223 and 6.5cm. I will probably never be good enough to shoot animals at ranges a 6um makes sense. But before I figured out I don't need a megaboomer to kill stuff I had already acquired a couple magnum bolt face Tikkas. So maybe I could waste some more money turning them into something cool that I don't really need. And I'm not going to sell them because in addition to being a slow learner, I'm also a hoarder.

In general if one is shooting past 600 to 700’ish and is practicing enough to do so, the 6 UM starts increasing hit rates.

Or are those of you guys that are going to a 6UM just looking for better trajectory/wind regardless of yardage? Or other...?

Primarily reduced wind drift and longer danger space. Secondary is longer terminal range.

I’m mainly thinking about it because I’m realizing I don’t need a 300, especially with the .223 thread. To be completely fair I don’t need a 6um either, but slinging bullets at 3300fps from a 16-18” barrel sounds fun. I also like reloading and have been wanting to mess around with a wildcat for a while and this one fits the bill. I’ll probably build a 6um or 6 Saum after the first of the year.

Dang, Neither of those gives me good reason to get one more power to the guys who can take advantage of the benefits though!

Maybe a whole nother thread, but all things considered including hit rate it seems like the 243 or 6cm would outshine pretty much everything else (except maybe the .223 but that’s not legal for elk in a few states)? Is the Only advantage to 6.5cm a slight barrel life advantage?

. 243 is the smallest for ALL big game in Colorado not just elk.

Factory rifle availability, barrel life, and ammo availability. The 6mm’s are better for actually shooting.

Dont be sad, be happy!

Avoid spending money on expensive brass, rare dies, more powder, and the negatives that come with highly overbore cartridges like shitty barrel life and more finicky loads.

Spend less, shoot more!

It’s a 22” Benchmark #5 straight fluted. Not my preferred contour but it’s what UM had on hand after I ****** up the last barrel by +Ping it.

My first elk with the 6UM, an OTC Colorado bull. Shots were at 380 yards. The first was quartered away. 4" behind the shoulder entrance and upper third, exited through the upper third of the opposite shoulder blade and bullet was under the hide. He ran about 15 yards and stopped. Decided to drop him there and neck shot him. Bullet did not exit, he dropped and never moved.
Very pleased with the results, watching hits in the scope is great. I was rested on my pack set up on a snow drift and had no issue seeing hits in the scope at 6x or so.

Didn't open it up to see, I was in a bad spot by myself at the time so I was in a hurry. Entrance was small and there was very little bloodshot on the offside shoulder so I'd guess it was a lot. The part of the bullet that made it through looks like just the base, everything else was still inside.
