I must suck at stalking, but I don’t think I’ve gotten closer than 30. Granted I don’t hunt the mountains much. I hunt more sagebrush and broken topography.
I was the same in eastern Wyoming, eastern Colorado and western Nebraska. It’s just open prairie and sandhill, sagebrush, bluffs, and tons of open spaces. Once you learn to stalk in that stuff I feel like the supalpine is much easier to get stupid close.

Sometimes in that sage brush, flat open country 30-40 is the closest you can actually get due to terrian. With the stick bow I just pass the stalks or use em for practice. Try to hunt areas where I know I can get sub 30 for the stick bows. Rules out a ton of spots out west, but for compound guys shouldn’t be an issue if they are good shooting at 30-50 yards.

I didn’t kill a mule deer with the stick for like the first 4-5 years. Just took 100s of stalks to get it somewhat figured out. I still mess up every single year lol.

I really feel like the stick bow guys are next level. Seems insanely difficult !

Are you hunting mostly out of a stand where you live?
In SC I use a stand and sticks and hunt the hottest sign I find. I always shoot a bunch off the ground as well. That’s most of the east coast, but the mtns and big woods I’ve stalked a few I’ve found bedded. Only ever killed one doing that lol.

It’s almost impossible in the south to find one bedded in a pine thicket and be able to get eyes on them to attempt a stalk.

Copy , I was thinking that was the case .

This will be my first year trying for archery mules in central OR. This is helpful. My comfort zone is 60 yards at the moment getting 3-4' groupings at that last time. noticed my arrows weren't flying straight though so shot paper and adjusted last week. Excited to shoot Monday and see how I do at 80 and 100 at the range. have a 3d shoot in July with targets out to 150 yards on one of the more challenging routes so I'm probably going to have to spin my arrow upside down so the top fletching doesn't hit my sight. Wish me luck I don't lose many of these arrows, would much rather spend the money on other gear
