Hey all!
Longtime lurker finally crawling out of the shadows. This is my first rifle build AND my first time reloading, so I've been quietly soaking up everything on here for a while...Zero gunsmithing or reloading experience before this - it's been a rabbit hole! A slow one, but 100% fun to go down.
Quick background: started with a Tikka T3x in .308 that just wasn't earning its spot in the safe, so I turned it into a 22 Creedmoor.
The build:
- Action: Tikka T3x
- Barrel: Preferred prefit, 24", Lite Hybrid contour, 081" SAAMI freebore, 1:7.5
The goal: a true do-all hunter. One rifle I can grab for everything from low-elevation California deer, bear, and pigs to a Rocky Mountain elk hunt at 10k feet in November, and reach out toward 6-800 when the conditions and the shot are right. I'm in CA so I'm running lead-free, which is a big part of why I landed on the 79gr DRTs.
Where I'm at: did a 2-shot zero (stoked doesn't cover it) and ran some 20 shots of factory 80gr ELD-X through it. Grouped OK, though honestly I'm pretty sure I was the weak link and the rifle's got more in it than I showed.
Now I want to start rolling my own with these 79 DRTs. My handload plan (where I need the wisdom):
- Brass: Hornady (I know, I know, it's just what I've got)
- Primer: CCI 250 magnum LR (is this a no-no with H4350? talk me out of it if so)
- Powder: H4350
- Starting at 36.0gr, working up in 0.3gr increments
Questions for the brain trust:
- Anybody actually running the 79 DRT in a 22 Creed? I can find almost nothing on this bullet. Load data, COAL, velocities, terminal reports, anything would be gold.
- Does that powder/primer/charge plan sound sane, or am I about to learn an expensive lesson?
Zooming out: if any of my components are the wrong horse for this race, say so now. I'd genuinely rather rip the bandaid and buy the right stuff than grind for months chasing a combo that was never going to get there.
Low ego over here and here to learn. I'll take encouragement or a reality check with equal gratitude. Thanks in advance, this place has already taught me a ton. Appreciate you guys!
