The 22 creedmoor thread

Thank you for this. How many grains of varget? I haven’t tried it yet as it didn’t have the speed max the other powders did in the loading manual. I’m on a 1:8 twist PBB in a tikka action 18”.

I’m at 39 gr of Varget (which is close to max if I recall correctly). Shoots very well.

Anyone improved their 22's?

Was annealing brass today and was like dang that shoulder is lacking. Basically the other two things are shoot are improved.

Ha yeah probably over kill. But then I remember Form playing with 22 UM.

Already pushing 88's at 3072. Another 100 fps plus could be fun!

Anyone know the process to get a non standard/uncommon improved round improved? And dies made?

There's a dude on longrangehunting.com that posts about a 22 Creed AI occasionally - can't recall his username at the moment. Not sure if the juice is worth the squeeze on it, but you only live once!

Basically, you'd be looking at ordering a custom reamer (or shopping for a smith who has one on hand already). If you go with the reamer, I believe you can have custom dies cut with it OR typically send some fired brass to a die manufacturer (I think Hornady, Lee, and likely a few others will make dies for you).

The costs start to add up, but I totally get the desire to tinker with stuff.

Let’s get em going on the 22 CM + Peak !!

C’MON ……Let’s Go !!!!

I just submitted a request to Federal on their web page for 22 CM + Peak.
Feel free to do the same.
Gotta start somewhere. !!

As far as I'm concerned the 22cm is improved. From 22-250 to improved was a bump. I doubt you'd see 100fps going from 22cm to improved. That said I'm the last guy to discourage someone from playing though. I just doubt the juice is worth the squeeze.

They’d do 22 arc but 22 creed doesn’t make sense.

Makes Perfect sense to me to + Peak the 22 CM.
With the Newer heavy for caliber projectiles
It would elevate the .224 caliber of factory offerings for small to medium sized big game.
As well as provide blistering velocities for lighter varmint hunting ammo.
I’m sure there are many factors Federal considers for engineering ammunition for bolt action centerfire rifle use.
I’ll be Happy if they do offer it in the future. 🤞

Hey all!

Longtime lurker finally crawling out of the shadows. This is my first rifle build AND my first time reloading, so I've been quietly soaking up everything on here for a while...Zero gunsmithing or reloading experience before this - it's been a rabbit hole! A slow one, but 100% fun to go down.

Quick background: started with a Tikka T3x in .308 that just wasn't earning its spot in the safe, so I turned it into a 22 Creedmoor.

The build:
  • Action: Tikka T3x
  • Barrel: Preferred prefit, 24", Lite Hybrid contour, 081" SAAMI freebore, 1:7.5
The goal: a true do-all hunter. One rifle I can grab for everything from low-elevation California deer, bear, and pigs to a Rocky Mountain elk hunt at 10k feet in November, and reach out toward 6-800 when the conditions and the shot are right. I'm in CA so I'm running lead-free, which is a big part of why I landed on the 79gr DRTs.

Where I'm at: did a 2-shot zero (stoked doesn't cover it) and ran some 20 shots of factory 80gr ELD-X through it. Grouped OK, though honestly I'm pretty sure I was the weak link and the rifle's got more in it than I showed.

Now I want to start rolling my own with these 79 DRTs. My handload plan (where I need the wisdom):
  • Brass: Hornady (I know, I know, it's just what I've got)
  • Primer: CCI 250 magnum LR (is this a no-no with H4350? talk me out of it if so)
  • Powder: H4350
  • Starting at 36.0gr, working up in 0.3gr increments
Questions for the brain trust:
  1. Anybody actually running the 79 DRT in a 22 Creed? I can find almost nothing on this bullet. Load data, COAL, velocities, terminal reports, anything would be gold.
  2. Does that powder/primer/charge plan sound sane, or am I about to learn an expensive lesson?
Zooming out: if any of my components are the wrong horse for this race, say so now. I'd genuinely rather rip the bandaid and buy the right stuff than grind for months chasing a combo that was never going to get there.

Low ego over here and here to learn. I'll take encouragement or a reality check with equal gratitude. Thanks in advance, this place has already taught me a ton. Appreciate you guys!

Welcome to Rokslide! No experience with a 22 creed, but if you’re new to reloading this thread is worth a read.

I don’t even want to think about how much time and components I wasted when I first started, adjusting powder charge by .2 grains, seating depth by .005, etc…. Not to mention basing those tiny changes off of three shot groups 🤦‍♂️

I’m fairly new to this too, but I’m guessing your magnum primers are gonna push your pressure higher to quick to get full effect of the H4350, especially in the weaker Hornady brass. That’s the only piece I would change.

I did 2 rifles in 22CM just like you did. Tikka T3x action with PBB barrels. Mine are 18” though.

I would also recommend that you scrap the COAL and use CBTO (cartridge base to ogive)measurements. That helped me out tremendously too. Figured out real quick the factory ammo had too much freebore and my barrels like those bullets within .020 of the lands.

i’m for a non suppressor state how is the muzzle blast and noise with this cartridge in an 18” barrel or should i stick with a longer one to tame it down
