The 22 creedmoor thread

Thought some of you folks might like to see this from the “scope zero check thread”…

Rifle: Tikka T3X Chambered in 22 Creedmoor. McGowen 20” stainless barrel. Suppressed with Polonium K. Wood Rokstok. High Desert Bottom Metal. Waters Magazine.

Scope: Maven RS1.2 SHR MIL.

Scope Mounting: UM Tikka Low Rings and Bases (using the provided threaded pins). All degreased, torqued, and paint penned in per @Formidilosus specs.

Shooting Position: Prone from a Walmart sleeping pad. Had to use the Jeep for shade as it was already 90 degrees by 7 am.

Spartan short bipod for front rest. Very low fill, lightweight rear field bag. Off hand controls the butt stock, bag used to "fill the void" is all.

Time/Activity Since Last Zero Check:

This 80 ELDX ammo lot was first shot and zeroed on 4/22/25 during load development and 500 more rounds were loaded the same spec.

It’s since been on a plane ride and back from Wyoming, bounced around in the backseat of my Jeep and Truck for hundreds of miles, packed around for dozens of shooting days, and was used for the CBC last weekend and this week.

The barrel and suppressor now have 300 rounds through them and seem to have stabilized nicely. Neither has ever been cleaned sorry.

For the nerds like me… I have 3275 FPS loaded into my current ballistics profiles and used for hard dope cards. Today I shot 8 shots (forgot to bring the Garmin out for first two shots) early morning off the hood of my Jeep before “going for a group” of 5 shots later in the morning. Note the average velocity from both sessions. This lot of ammo has maintained 1-2 FPS for every 5-20 shot string average I’ve chrono’d so far.

Zero Check and Target Results:

No surprises.

I'm back on the 88's.

In hindsight I attribute my pressure issues earlier in this thread with brass sizing and fast powders (Lever, H4350).

I came back from Shoot2Hunt with a goal to make one of my rifles line up with Quick Drop.

I was manipulating fps and long match bullets in Shooter App on the flight home and with components that I already have the 2 options that stuck out were 77gr TMK with 22-250 brass and 88 ELD with my bootleg 22 CM brass.

The slow powders are I have on hand are H1000 and N565. I have a lot more N565 so I went for it first.

41.5gr N565 @ 2.680 (lands are hitting at 2.700) averages around 2750fps which is a little hot for quick drop by 15 fps or so but I was looking for an easy to remember load value with a .0 or .5 after the whole number.

I'm going to practice hiking away from my Cold Bore Target and randomly stop and make shots in field positions with quick drop calcs...without Shooter App or a profile in my Revics. I put my cold bore target around 600 yards out from a position with a mowed path on purpose to represent the range goal of the class.

I’ve certainly thought about designing loads to make quick drops work. My .223 77 TMK load lines up out to 600, kinda seems like the 88 gr is neutering the 22CM to get there though. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The 223 lines up nice with the 77g TMK, 79g DRT both around 2800fps, and 80g ELDM at 2750fps. Confirmed each with shots at 600yds.

The 22cm is too fast, corrections for quick drop good gun get a bit busy even with short barrels.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought that about the 22cm. I didn’t build it to dumb it down though, so not going to load it lighter to find a better QD load.

In order to QD you still need to range the target…

I’ve honestly stopped even looking at the “yardage” in my Revic binos this spring and summer and just looked at the trued up dope solution that instantly populates right in front of my face.

Taming down my 22CM to align with QD, when it’s my long range hunting rifle, doesn’t make sense to me. For my 223 and sub 600 yard shots absolutely.

If you don’t look at the “yardage” how do you make a wind call?

I had a good load for 77tmk/223 and quickdrop but my 6 new cans of powder have it over pressure. Seems like 223 AI might be more reliable? I'm going to tweak it in 22-250 brass as next project. Barrel is almost shot out so it's just a last hurray and more of an activity than solution.

Yeah, but...

A lot of guys are loading up to or over pressure on brass to attain goals.

It's nice to have the capacity to screw around the other way.

Right on. I’m not chasing speed or pushing pressure, but it’s screaming w the 77s. I have some 88s to try w the new barrel, might change my tune.

Iv gotten enough questions and have had enough questions about this cartridge that I think it needs it’s own thread. Too much clutter in the 223 thread. I’ll start with my build, and findings on what I’m hoping will be the ultimate deer gun. Hopefully others can add their experience as well as I know a handful of us on here are in the process of making one of these things .

I’ll start with the barrel, I ordered a 16.5” PVA prefit, on a 7 twist blank, the prefit has .100 freebore, is PVA 3B contour and threaded 1/2”, barrel is also cerakoted. I ordered on the 10th of January and got the barrel today. The barrel weighs 2lbs 9oz. The way PVA contours their barrels you end up with the same or similar muzzle diameter whether 16” or 26”, so going longer would likely increase weight more than expected.

THIS IS A TIKKA PREFIT.

The barrel spec is a 7 RH twist, .219 bore, 6 groove barrel. The chamber is cut for .100 freebore. Speaking with PVA they are specd with a large neck so alpha and the like will run, alpha brass drops in the chamber without difficulty. Machine work looks excellent. I took some measurements with 88eldm with it off the rifle.

I screwed the barrel on, and torqued with a SAC modular action wrench to 75 ft lbs. Headspace was confirmed with forester headspace guages.

I’ll update this thread as it gets screwed on, as I load ammo for it and as I hopefully shoot some animals this fall with it.

I encourage others to share their experience with it as well.
Wow.

Just FYI, I’m just a tad under 3K with 88’s out of a 16.5” barrel, with 38.5g H4350 and no apparent pressure. Just my load, please use your own data.

That's a good barrel for speed then, I'm at 3060 with 39gr h4350 in a 20". I'm at sea level so probably not applicable to most of you but quick drop good gun gets me within a tenth to about 450 then gets out of wack. Still helpful for a lot of the areas I hunt although using the revics now if I have a range I've also got an elevation solution

I’m super happy with the speed and accuracy. The gun actually shoot everything very well, but likes the 88’s the best, then 85.5 Bergers, then 77 TMK’s and finally ELDX’s - the X’s shoot the worst and are still right at a 10 shot 1” group.

Both work great and are quick.

I made this video for a buddy of mine who was interested in buying the Revics, give it a watch and see what you think.

Overview:

The Shot:

Cool stuff. I have the revics and do think the wind feature is nice and intuitive. I just haven't committed to taking the time and using it. I have used gun number stuff for so long in NRL Hunter comps and practice that frankly most of the time I am just going off of feel and don't take the time to wait for it to spit wind out. At one point I think I either turned it off or just set it to 0 MPH.

Legit 10 shot 1” groups from 80 ELDXs at 22CM speeds is REALLY good.
