I’m interested in a follow up on this barrels performance. I’m currently trying to decide which route to go for my next build. A PBB 16” 1:8 twist is one I’m considering. This velocity seems really slow, even for a 16”. My current gun is has a 18” barrel and I shot a box of this ammo through it when it was new and was getting about 3100fps.
I expect to see the velocity increase once I get some more rounds through the barrel and also once I start shooting fired brass. Also, I could definitely push a bit harder with the powder but I'd rather not as it will see a wide range of temperatures and a lot of snow/wet conditions.

Got my new barrel from @Unknown Munitions up and running. It’s a 24” ace tikka prefit, tikka lite contour, throated for 88s. Solid turn around time as well from UM, fit and finish look good, bore scoped and everything looked nice and clean on the chamber job and the barrel itself 👍🏻

Barrel shoots well. Initially tried RL26 which produced some blazing speeds but sustained accuracy was not there.

Seems to shoot both 80eld and 88eld well. Two larger groups with the 80s were tiny but with a flier of uncertain cause (maybe me maybe not)…ballistically they are equal the 80gr at 3300 and 88 at 3150fps approx,

Final load is going to be 88eld in alpha LRP with fed 215s, 40.5gr n555 at 3175ish FPS (need to verify velocity tomorrow).

Did you measure your throat with a comparator?
What OAL are you loading the 88’s at?

My upcoming 18” build from them is the same barrel and will be throated for 88’s as well, so curious how that turned out.

My dad’s tikka in 22-250 that we had chambered to 22cm hated the 88’s. I’m talking 3”-5” groups. Shot the 80 eldm about 2”, and the 80 eldx slightly better. Tried h4350 and 6.5 Staball.

Loaded 5 with 77 tmk’s and 6.5 Staball just shy of 1/2”. Going to load 15-20 more and retest and then off to the races if it holds up.

I also have a rechambered Tikka. My primary load is the 80gr ELDM. They shoot really well. I’ve tried H4350, AA4350 and Staball 6.5. Did well with all 3.

I tried a box of the factory Hornady 80 ELD-X and the gun absolutely hated them.

Have not tried 88s yet. I have some sitting on the bench waiting to be worked up.

The one I am shooting now is the same, except it won’t shoot the 80gr X or M. 77gr TMK’s are good.

Any concerns shooting the 80 ELDm vs 80 ELDx on big game? I'm planning on using my 22-250AI that shoots the 80 ELDm @3200 fps this spring for black bear. From past experience shots will be 250-600.

I haven’t hunted with it yet, but I have the same intended use case. Pumped for the spring!

Random tangent - been lurking over on the small caliber failure thread, lol. Just genuinely curious - for those of you who have hunted with 22cm and been successful, are you shooting double scapula/high shoulder or lung shot?

Does that change with distance or ammo selection?

Heart and Lungs but if shoulders are in the way depending on the angle, I still send it. They are all in the freezer so far.

80gr eldm @ 2950 out of an 18”bbl
Full pass through on a 70lb shoat. Jumped them out of a bottom. Walking in I heard a lot branches breaking in some thick salt cedar. A sal started blowing at me then started grunting loudly trying to scare me off. Saw them moving though a pocket in the brush it was a big sal that had about 15 shoats with her. Free handed one of the shoats at around a 100yards when he stopped. Ran 50 yards and dropped.

Not much science here but I think I’m gonna stick with the throat when given that shot. It’s working extremely well with very very little meat loss. Put on my waders today and hiked in to my favorite whitetail spot on the planet. Once again it did not dissapoint.
