You don't worry about case fill with the bullet seated out so much? For hunting, I worry that the powder column on steep shots could affect internal ballistics (think downhill shot where powder is not packed against primer flash hole).

This is why I'm hesitant to use just H4350 at 41-ish grains...

N555 is FULL at 43.5gr, H4350 doesn't give any issues either tho.

41 gr h4350 is plenty case fill.

Muley buck that was jumped out of its bed at 80 yards, impact velocity of 2880ish fps with 88 ELDm. Buck was sharply quartered away while running, bullet hit right at base of the backstrap, above shoulder. The deer dropped and when approached had a few agonal breaths, then expired. The backstrap in the area was destroyed, heavy bone fragmentation with bone or bullet fragments that entered upper thoracic cavity and upper lobes of lungs. Bullet was through and through the strap/bone.

Okay what am I doing wrong? Redding type S dies new alpha munitions brass with 77gr tmk. I bought a VLD seating stem because the stem that came with the dies did the same damn thing.

Did you chamfer the case mouths?

My alpha brass had very tight necks, so I ran a mandrel though them and it stopped deforming projectiles. I'd also make sure you've chamfer/deburred the case mouth.

Definitely looks like the result of a tight neck.

I did a light chamfer and ran some graphite around the necks and that was the result. Maybe I’ll just live with it and hope it gets better after resizing. I hate running fresh brass thru too many extra processes.

For what it's worth, since the initial hiccup requiring a mandrel to open the necks, the brass has been fine. Haven't needed to use a mandrel again. Just size and seat like normal.

For what it's worth, since the initial hiccup requiring a mandrel to open the necks, the brass has been fine. Haven't needed to use a mandrel again. Just size and seat like normal.

500 pieces of alpha prepped.




Chamfer inside and out, oversized nylon brush on drill the inside of the necks, moly the inside of the neck, mandrel to preferred size. .2235 mandrel for me.

Might seem like a bit much to some. But no one said shit when I shot a 30 shot .7 group with virgin brass in a 300 Norma Mag Improved with the same case prep lol.

Once it’s shot, the carbon in the necks is even better and bullets seat smoother and have less case neck weld to the bullet.

It’s a neck friction issue, likely not a tension issue.

Rub some imperial wax over the rim, followed by a turning mandrel and a dry tumble. Freshly annealed brass has a lot of friction. Beyond going with very light actual interference fit, you’re not going to fix this problem without a wet lube and knocking it down with some dirty media.

Obviously chamfer and debur after.

That will fix your problem.
