I settled on Hybrid 100V powder. Getting just over 3100 fps with the 88’s out of an 18” barrel. I’ll end up spinning on a new barrel later this summer I’m guessing. Have about 800 rounds on this one.

16” McGowen tikka prefit w/7.7 twist with an ULTRA 9 screwed on the end. I have 15 rounds down the tube and am getting 3050FPS with 42 grains of H4350 in LRP alpha brass shooting the 88s. OAL is 2.66. There’s some bolt lift but almost no ejector marks on the brass.

When I get more time I’ll shoot for groups and mess with seating depth but for now I’m 20k off the lands.

Posting this for general awareness after seeing some of the loads posted in here.

Peterson and Hodgdon have both done pressure testing in the 22CM. For H4350, Peterson lists max as 38.7g powder for 75g bullet, and 36.9g powder as max for 80g bullet. Loading 40g+ of H4350 with 88s is big chamber pressure, even if traditional brass markings aren't showing.

H4831sc and H1000 are better options for the heavier bullets. Even with H4831sc 40-41.5ish is a max load for the heavier bullets. Be safe out there!

That’s true, however also look at their data stopping at around 60k, not 65k. When loaded to 64-65k chamber pressure, you get quite a bit higher MV than what they are showing.

Yep, Hodgdon is conservative. The Peterson data I noted is at 62.5k and higher speeds. Some loads posted here are 5-6 grains past that.

Oh yeah. The 22CM is one that can be ran at higher pressures and not show it sometimes. And, while 100% not recommending it, they can do so without being “dangerous”. I know quite a few people who are shooting high round count 22CM’s at 70,000 plus PSI regularly. Not generally my cup of tea, but…

It is worth noting, that almost universally when people reload until they see “slight” pressure signs- they’re well over 65k. From what I’ve seen the average reloader is using ammo that is 68-70k.

It’s all fun and games until you pinch one off in the rain.

I plan to run my 22 creed at reasonable pressure.

Iv read the Peterson/hogdon data, one thing that I really wonder is what freebore they are dealing with and what the bore/groove diameter is. Lots of .218 22 cal barrels floating around.

I estimate that I'm definitely pushing the limits pushing a 70gr mono (more bearing surface) at 3584 in an 18" .218 bore. If that load isn't half moa or better I'll be stepping down, not up in charge. Curious what pressure that load is with 43 grains of r17? The alpha OCD brass definitely hides the typical ejector marks until I'm way over pressure. At least in my blueprinted/squared up kimber action.
-remember to account for reaching higher pressure sooner with monos...
Another caution, cfe223 powder had me way over pressure with a medium book powder charge (wrecked the brass in one shot level!).
5 pound (all in) rifle still recoils like a mouse at nearly 3600, loving it!

Edit. Xxl site show me at 58,800 psi in THEIR rifle. Not sure what that means in mine.

Thoughts on this vs something like a 22 BR or 22 Grendel/ARC? I would think barrel life would be pretty significantly different. I've got a 6mm ARC Howa mini for the kids, and really like it.

Seems like that 30-ish grain capacity cartridge would do well pushing an 88 ELD or 77 TMK at moderate speeds. The BR is probably the practical choice in a Tikka due to bolt face, though I'm pretty impressed with that ARC so far.

Easy one for me to answer.

-I wanted a short barrel, 22 creed makes what I want a bullet starting at, in a 16” package. Specifically talking 88 grain bullets.

-Had I wanted to shoot 77s I’d just keep shooting my 223. It’s a 4mph bullet regardless at reasonable speeds and for me I’ll limit my range based solely on the wind efficiency of a bullet.

-Barrel life, if I want to shoot volume in a 22 cal I’ll just keep shooting 75/77s in a 223. Nearly the same results, lots of barrel life and cheap.

The 22 creed for me allowed me to shoot an 88 starting at 2800+ in a 16” suppressed barrel.

22 creed means no messing with mags at all.

And on a plus size, no messing with brass, open the box and it’s ready to go.

Finally loaded 4831sc. Worked up to 42 grains. No pressure signs. 42 gave 2850 in my 16” barrel.

I loaded 10 at 41 grains to check accuracy.

If it shoots okay my plan is to shoot drills for another hundred rounds, and see where speed is at.

I also cleaned the barrel after 100 rounds. I plan to clean every 100 with this rifle.

Im guessing that this load tops at 2850, which I’m okay with. It looks like 4831 is going to be much nicer to the brass. Also gives me great load density.

22 grendel is a fun round speaking from experience with a few barrels on AR builds.
-Yes, there would be better barrel life.
-You obviously are not going to get creedmoor speeds on a grendel case without a ling barrel
-making the brass can be a pain (time consuming) from 6.5 grendel brass, but if you 22 a 22-6arc then would be easy.

I never played much with heavies, I really liked 69 tmk at 3300 for thermal hunting, they would anchor them 1 shot and not tear up hides.
