I've had no complaints. you can only go to touchless car washes, and in the winter it will get ice that forms and has to be knocked off when the wetness from melting snow freezes, but otherwise no issues.
Hard to take on and off? Have a bakflip on mine all the time but would be cool to swap to the softopper for hunting season then swap back if its not a huge production each time

Takes less than 10 minutes. It's 2 pins and the 4 clamps. You can also undo the buttons and just fold the whole thing forward so you have the entire bed available if you are somewhere and don't have the ability to remove it. Again, I think a hard shell is probably better if you don't mind having a shell on all the time, but the versatility of the softtopper is pretty great.

Depending on the length of time I'm out will determine whether I stay in the back of my truck or setup my Kodiak tent. Each option has its pros and cons. I was in southern AZ a few weeks back and I put this video together of my truck bed setup. Hopefully this helps you a bit.
