My parents are moving to Tennessee to get out of CA due to retirement coming up and expensive living. They are looking to move on the out skirts of Nashville and I was just wondering, what’s the hunting like out there? Is it mostly private? Is it more spot and stalk or tree stand? Is there anything reasonably close to hunt near Nashville? (Don’t want exact spots just general areas) any sort of info would be greatly appreciated.

Good amount of public land, some even in the city around Percy priest lake. Cheatam WMA, Yananlhi and a few other smaller areas. Natches Trace StatePark, too. There are also military bases, munition plants, steam plants that you can hunt. Several state parks within 2 hours and you can drive to Cherokee National Forrest for bear and hog hunting. Big South Fork National
scenic Area (one of the few Huntable NPS properties in the US) and Cherokee are best for Backcountry style hunting.

Hunting from trees is the most effective way to hunt Whitetail in that area. Bear hunting without dogs is very very tough, but still hunting is the way to go. Great squirrel, rabbit and turkey hunting, too. Duck hunting is ok in that region. No major fly ways but lots of water.

I can refer a solid real estate agent if they need one. I lived there for a number of years and still maintain a number of relationships in Nashville.

That is probably the best in depth answer I’ve ever gotten. Thank you very much I appreciate it a lot. Seems that there is plenty of opportunities if you get out and hike around a little bit and do a little exploring

I live here just south of Nashville. What he said is pretty much spot on. Lots of opportunity around. The deer hunting is getting much better and my buddy's nephew killed the World record whitetail in 2016 in a suburb of Nashville within 20 minutes of downtown. Lots of great hunting just west of the city near the TN river, good hunting south along the duck river corridor and north is really good but more private. Ft. Campbell at Clarksville is a couple hundred thousand acres and they offer hunting on both the TN and KY sides. Some giant deer come off the base every year. KY is about 1 hour from downtown and some great hunting for deer and turkey up there within 1:30 drive. It's a great city and tons to do and very friendly with a great sports and music scene. Traffic and construction are problems but that comes with growth. It's manageable.

Hope they enjoy it. We love it here.

Coming from LA and a super busy area I don’t think traffic will be what it’s like here, as far as hunting I’m happy to hear that there’s plenty of opportunities around. Once my parents move, I wouldn’t be surprised if I’m close behind on moving along with them into the area

Does anyone fish for stripers and paddlefish in the Tennessee River?

I go down a couple times a year and take my nephews fishing at the dam by Goodlettsville. Hope to be down in April again.

My background is mostly limited to catfishing the TN River, but people fish for both stripped bass and paddlefish. For stripers, I think the Caney Fork area is popular.

When I was there in August there was a group of Asian guys catching a pile of stripers from shore beneath the dam. Beautiful fish.

We snag for paddlefish and run setlines for catfish up here. Saw there was a season for them down there.

Have a nephew very interested in hunting so following along with the thread.

Yep, Stephen killed that deer on some family ground in Gallatin, TN. It was either 3.5 or 4.5, there is some disagreement on age. Dressed weight was 140lbs which is not particularly large for this area.

Looks like a guy in IL has passed him though this year with a 320" deer with bow.

My parents live near cookeville. Nice area haven’t hunted it yet but I was surprised by how many deer you can take. Not exactly sure but I think it was like 4-5 a season or something silly.

Turkey hunted an hour east on Nashville several years ago. Did a lot of door knocking and was given the go ahead to turkey hunt, but was told by all don't even ask to deer hunt. And FYI Tenn. is looooooaded up with turkeys..

My parents live in Hendersonville on the lake which is 20 minutes outside of Nashville. They live on 3 acres and covered up in urban deer. I don't know much on the public hunting situation but have friends that hunt several farm properties and pull good deer off them. My buddy lives and hunts not to far from where that record buck in Gallatin was taken. The fishing is also good, Percy Priest is good for stripers and then there are several rivers and streams within a couple hours of nashville that are good for fly fishing. Turkey season is also a good time. You'll enjoy the area.

2 buck limit. Certain zones of the state, you can take 3 does a day for the entire ~100 day season. I used to routinely kill 5-7 deer a season and I believe I took 9 one time.

I’m excited to get out there and hunt and fish. Trying to do anything out doors in California is a 4-6 hour drive to still have to try and find any decent public land to hunt that’s not swamped out.
